🗣️ Speech Pathology Week 2025: Impact Through Communication

Communication is more than just words—it’s how we connect, learn, work, and belong. This year’s theme highlights the incredible impact communication has on every part of life, and the vital role speech pathologists play in making it accessible for everyone.

🌍 When communication is challenging, the impact is felt deeply. More than 1.2 million Australians live with a communication disability. Without the right support, challenges in learning, employment, relationships, and independence can grow. But with support, those barriers can be broken down.

💡 Speech pathologists create impact every single day. Whether it’s helping a child say their first words, supporting someone after a stroke to speak again, or assisting with swallowing for safety and quality of life—their work changes lives. Small steps can create big changes, and that is the true power of communication.

🙌 This Speech Pathology Week, let’s celebrate. Share the message, thank a speech pathologist, and raise awareness of the essential role communication plays in all our lives. Together, we can recognise and amplify the impact through communication.

🚨 NDIS Travel Price Cuts – What It Means for You 🚨

As a mobile speech therapy provider 🚘, Sunflower Speech Pathology 🌻 has proudly travelled across Sydney to provide essential services directly to homes, schools, and communities. But with the newly released NDIS 2025–2026 Pricing Arrangements, travel reimbursement for mobile therapists has been significantly reduced — and the consequences are serious‼️

Here’s what it means:
🌻 Therapists are being forced to reduce their service areas.
🌻 Families will struggle to find local therapists with availability.
🌻 Mobile services may no longer be sustainable — pushing therapists back into clinics.
🌻 Participants will be expected to travel themselves, which is not always possible.
🌻 Despite 7 years of inflation, there’s been no increase to speech therapy hourly rates.
🌻 Burnout is rising in a field made up of over 94% women in Australia.
🌻 These changes threaten accessibility, equity, and choice — the very values the NDIS was built on.

💌 All Sunflower clients should have received an email with new/amended Service Agreements. Please sign and return at your earliest convenience.

📣 Take Action Now:
If mobile services matter to you, email your local MP and contact the NDIS to request a reversal of these cuts and reinstatement of the original travel pricing.

Let’s protect access to mobile therapy services for those who need it most. 💛

October is AAC Awareness Month! AAC, or Augmentative and Alternative Communication, plays a crucial role in helping those with speech and language difficulties communicate more effectively. Speech Pathologists are essential in assessing, implementing, and training individuals on how to use AAC tools. Research shows that AAC improves communication and language development, particularly in children. Let’s spread awareness and advocate for accessible communication for all!
