If you saw this morning’s reel, this is what I do recommend instead.

Rounded shoulders are rarely just a strength problem. More often, they’re the result of long-held muscle tension through the chest and shoulders.

When the chest remains tight, it gently pulls the shoulders forwards. The muscles through the neck and upper back then have to work harder to support you, which is why so many people live with tight necks, sore shoulders and the constant urge to roll their shoulders or pull them back.

Somatic movement takes a different approach.

Rather than forcing your shoulders into a better position, we help your nervous system release unnecessary muscle tension. As the chest softens, your shoulders can settle into a more natural position, allowing your neck and shoulders to relax.

This is the class I recorded today for my online studio.

Have you ever tried somatic movement to improve your posture? I’d love to hear your experience below.

Part 1 - A posture brace can change where your shoulders sit. It can’t teach your body how to hold them there.

Before I say anything else—I know posture braces have their place in certain clinical situations. This post isn’t about those.

It’s about the many people who wear them hoping they’ll fix rounded shoulders.

Today I spotted posture braces for sale in a waiting room, and it reminded me why they wouldn’t be my first choice.

If the muscles through the front of your chest are holding unnecessary tension, simply pulling your shoulders backwards doesn’t teach those muscles how to relax. In many cases, once the brace comes off, your shoulders return to where they started because the underlying muscle tension hasn’t changed.

That’s why I take a different approach.

Rather than forcing the body into a position, I use gentle somatic movement to help retrain the nervous system and reduce unnecessary muscle tension. As the muscles through the chest begin to soften, the shoulders can gradually return to a more natural resting position—without having to force them there.

Real, lasting change comes from changing the way your body organises itself, not simply holding it in a different position.

Have you ever tried a posture brace? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments.

If you’re looking for a different approach to rounded shoulders and improving your posture, reach out—I’d love to help.

Mid-back feeling stiff or stuck after sitting at the computer too long?

This week inside the Online Studio, we’re focusing on the mid-back — especially that tight, stuck feeling that can build after long days at the desk and follow you into the evening.

Each week, we focus on a different area of the body, so you don’t have to overthink what to do. Just log in, follow this week’s class, or choose something from the class library.

Classes are gentle, guided, and can be done on any device, anytime.

Most are between 10–35 minutes, so you can fit them into your day without needing a big routine.

You can start with the free 14-day trial.

Have you ever had a massage, felt amazing afterwards, and then a few days later noticed the
same tight shoulders, stiff back or tense hips creeping back in?
As a remedial massage therapist of almost 30 years, I’ve seen this again and again.
And it doesn’t always mean the massage didn’t work.
Often, the body is simply returning to a pattern it already knows.
The way we sit, brace, work, move and respond to stress can all teach the nervous system to
keep certain muscles switched on in the background.
This is why recurring muscle tension often needs more than pressure or stretching. It needs
awareness, gentle repetition, and a way to help the brain and muscles communicate more
clearly again.
That’s where somatic movement can be such a useful missing piece.
I’ve explained this more fully in my latest blog: Why Tight Muscles Keep Coming Back After
Massage.
