Have you ever had a massage, felt amazing afterwards, and then a few days later noticed the
same tight shoulders, stiff back or tense hips creeping back in?
As a remedial massage therapist of almost 30 years, I’ve seen this again and again.
And it doesn’t always mean the massage didn’t work.
Often, the body is simply returning to a pattern it already knows.
The way we sit, brace, work, move and respond to stress can all teach the nervous system to
keep certain muscles switched on in the background.
This is why recurring muscle tension often needs more than pressure or stretching. It needs
awareness, gentle repetition, and a way to help the brain and muscles communicate more
clearly again.
That’s where somatic movement can be such a useful missing piece.

If your body still feels tight no matter what you do, it can get so frustrating.

Especially when you feel like you’re already doing the things that are meant to help.

You might stretch, move your body, book the massage, get treatment, try to stay active… and still find the same neck tension, tight shoulders, back stiffness, hip tightness or morning stiffness creeping back in.

This is the part most people miss.

Tight muscles aren’t always just muscles that need more stretching.

Sometimes they’re muscles your brain has learnt to keep switched on.

So even when you get relief for a while, your body can slowly drift back to the same old tension pattern because that’s what feels familiar.

This is where Somatic Movement works differently.

Instead of forcing tight muscles to relax, it uses slow, gentle movement and awareness to help your brain and muscles communicate more clearly again.

Your body starts to notice where it’s holding, soften the effort, and with repetition, begin learning a different way to hold, move and let go.

That’s why the changes can feel subtle at first.

A lot of people assume stiffness is just something we have to accept as we get older.

And yes — our bodies do change with age.

But many people are also carrying years of built-up muscle tension without even realising it.

Stress.
Old injuries.
Always rushing.
Sitting more.
Moving less.
Pushing through.

Over time the brain and muscles can get stuck in patterns where certain muscles stay slightly switched on all the time.

And eventually that starts to feel normal.

That’s one of the reasons somatic movement can feel so different.

Instead of forcing the body to stretch more or work harder, it helps improve the communication between the brain and muscles so the body can finally start letting go of some of that long-held tension.

And often people are surprised by how much lighter and easier movement can feel afterwards.

A lot of women are carrying far more tension than they realise.

Not because they’re doing something wrong…

but because they’ve spent years pushing through, getting on with things and holding everything together.

And often the body starts doing the same thing.

The jaw slowly tightens.
The shoulders creep upwards.
The stomach grips.
The hips and lower back start feeling stiff and heavy.

At first it can feel subtle.

Then one day you realise you never actually feel fully relaxed anymore.

One of the things I love about somatic movement is that it gives the body a chance to experience ease again.

Not through forcing or stretching…
but through slow movements that help the brain and muscles communicate more clearly so the body can finally start letting go of some of that long-held tension.
