Question Session - What Is Natural Burial? A South Australian Guide

Natural burial is a simple idea: return the body to the earth as gently as possible, with no preservation chemicals and a fully biodegradable coffin or shroud, so the site can settle back into the landscape over time rather than being marked with a traditional headstone.

How it works:
No embalming or preservation fluids are used
The body is placed in an environmentally friendly casket or shroud
Graves are typically marked with a native tree or plant rather than a headstone, vase, or plaque
Records are carefully kept so families can always find the exact location, even without a visible marker

Is it legal in South Australia? Yes. Under the Burial and Cremation Act (SA), burial must take place in an authorised cemetery or a recognised natural burial ground. A natural burial can be arranged at any cemetery in South Australia that offers the option, and in some cases on private land where permission has been granted.
Where you can arrange one in SA
🌿 Wirra Wonga ("bush grave"), Enfield Memorial Park - SA's first dedicated natural burial area, set among native mallee woodland
🌿 Pilyu Yarta ("peaceful ground"), Smithfield Memorial Park - a companion natural burial garden with native trees, shrubs and grasses
🌿 Martungka ("in remembrance"), Kersbrook Cemetery, Adelaide Hills - opened in 2024, set within the Adelaide Hills landscape
🌿 A private natural burial ground within the Aldinga Arts Eco-Village, available to village residents
Each site preserves its natural character deliberately so the landscape itself becomes the memorial.

Why families choose it: For many, it's about simplicity, environmental care, and the comfort of knowing a loved one becomes part of a living landscape. A place that changes and grows rather than staying fixed in stone.

Thinking about what's right for your family? We're always happy to talk through the options, natural burial included.

This Dying to Know Day, we encourage everyone to start the conversation.

Talking about death doesn’t make it happen sooner. It can give the people we love clarity, confidence and reassurance when they may need it most.

There are some things the people we love shouldn’t have to guess.

What matters to you at the end of life?
Would you prefer burial or cremation?
What music would you choose?
What kind of farewell feels like you?
And most importantly do the people closest to you know?

You don’t need to have every answer. Sometimes the most important thing is simply starting the conversation.

If nobody knows your wishes, perhaps today is the day to tell someone.

"In the end, we'll all become stories."

What a profound and comforting thought. The legacy we leave isn't found in possessions or achievements alone - it's in the way we made people feel, the lives we touched, and the memories we created together.

A story might be the way your grandfather's eyes lit up when he talked about cricket. The recipe your mother made every Sunday without ever writing it down. The sound of your friend's laugh that you could pick out in any crowd.

These are the things that stay.

We'd love to hear from you - share a story about someone you love in the comments below. A memory, a moment, something that captures who they were. Because the stories we tell keep the people we've lost close, and remind us that a life well-lived is never truly gone.

Tell us - what story do you carry with you?
