A new initiative has been launched at the hospital - a 'book nook' which is located in the corridor between front reception and the cafe.

Basking in the morning sun that streams in from the courtyard, the nook warmly invites patients, families, visitors and staff to browse the selection, and then choose a book to read while at the hospital. In fact, the book nook has become so popular recently, that the area will soon be expanded with more shelving to accommodate even more books!

There is something for everyone on offer, including children's books, non-fiction, recipes, and Danielle Steel classics. Books can then be returned when leaving the hospital, or when finished - with book swaps or donations gratefully accepted.

Feel free to share a book review if you have borrowed a book recently, or comment the title of a great book that you enjoyed reading.

An exciting milestone for the hospital over the weekend, as the very first VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution cases were undertaken here at Calvary Central Districts, in the capable hands of Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Bobby Pandit.

This new technology will be utilised for many of our joint replacement surgeries going forward, as it offers surgeons real-time data and precision. For patients it means fewer appointments with less radiation (due to no CT scans being required), along with quick overall recovery times.

Congratulations to Dr Pandit and the theatre team on the successful installation and integration of this new equipment!

Today we acknowledge the life and service of a much loved four-legged friend Janey.

Together Berry and Janey volunteered countless hours over the past four years, across both Calvary Adelaide and Central Districts hospitals, bringing smiles to patients and staff members alike.

Janey's kennel name was 'WYSIWYG Incredible Story' and her life was certainly an incredible story of comfort, kindness and connection.

Volunteer Coordinator Jess said "Janey's legacy will not be measured by the number of visits she made week after week, but by the countless lives she touched. Every patient who smiled because of her, every family member who found comfort in her presence, and every staff member whose day was made brighter carries a small piece of her legacy."

While we will deeply miss seeing Janey by his side, we are grateful that Berry will continue to be part of our Calvary family, sharing his warm smile with patients, staff and visitors in a new role at Calvary Adelaide as a Concierge Volunteer in reception.

The Calvary volunteer program includes social visits from those who speak a language in addition to English. Across our three SA hospital, we have more than 20 different languages spoken by our volunteers, including Hungarian, Nepali, Malay, Hindi, and Korean. Hearing their own language can help patients feel more comfortable during their stay, and is a special service that our volunteers can offer.

Italian speaking Rita recently had a visit from volunteer Paula, and she relished the opportunity to share stories about her family, and life in Australia after she came to Adelaide nearly 70 years ago.

If you or a loved one would like to find out what languages are offered by volunteers during a stay, please speak to your nurse who will put you in contact with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common type of newly diagnosed cancer, and the second deadliest in Australia. As Bowel Cancer Awareness month draws to a close, we hear from General Surgeon Dr Anthony Ciccocioppo in this edition of our Q&A series with Calvary specialists. Here he speaks about the most common misconception about bowel cancer and what we can do to reduce our risk factors.
