* PODCAST: Winter Listening - Revisiting the ATAR and Beyond: Real Skills for Real Life *

It is soon to be ‘that’ time of year again and the HSC is going to be fast upon us … and we are revisiting a timely podcast about the ‘HSC and the ATAR’.

All too often, the HSC is a stressful time for students and for their parents and families also. In this podcast, we hear from Clinical Psychologists – Dr Mathew Pfeiffer and Michelle Wotton from The Resilience Centre as they shed light on the difference between ‘ambition’ and ‘perfectionism’, when it comes to working towards a goal.

They bring a wealth of experience and a passion for helping students and their families to do the whole HSC experience (and not just during, but importantly life afterwards) well …

Have you cultivated "a doughnut moment" today?

A doughnut moment is when 3 or more of your strongest factors from 'The Resilience Doughnut' model collide, all at the same time, in an activity or project.

THIS is how we build our resilience.

When we think about sport, we tend to think that all the preparation and training is simply about winning - it is both the aim and the outcome of the game. But what do we hear from our pro athletes?

Challenges in sports are always going to be a given. Experiences like losing a game, being sidelined from the team or facing a physical setback with a serious injury, all have a benefit in life that brings a different kind of helpful lesson.

When we see a challenge as a opportunity, instead of a setback, experiences that do not go according to plan are then able to help athletes develop a resilience that extends way beyond the playing field.

These are lessons we can all take from the inevitability of adversity in life, not just lessons for our pro athletes:

There's a powerful image on the cover of Barry Zworestine's book Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing? — a figure standing above the clouds, bathed in the warm light of a rising sun. Beneath them, their reflection: a soldier in full kit, weapon shouldered, still facing the past. Above, the same person
