Today is both World Su***de Prevention Day and R U OK? Day.
Two reminders that land on the same day for a reason.

Asking someone if they are okay is one of the simplest, most powerful things you can do. And asking twice, when the first answer is fine, might matter even more.

For people living with psychosocial disability, the weight of daily life can be significant. Isolation, stigma, and the challenges of navigating systems that were not always designed with them in mind can make hard days feel even harder.

If you are supporting someone who is struggling, ask. Listen. And if you or someone you know needs help right now, please reach out to Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Myth: endometriosis is not a disability.
Reality: for many women, it is profoundly disabling.

Endometriosis affects around one in seven Australian women. For some, symptoms are manageable. For others, the chronic pain, fatigue, and complications associated with the condition significantly affect their ability to work, maintain relationships, complete daily tasks, and participate in their community.

When endometriosis causes permanent, significant functional impairment, NDIS support may be available. That impairment is what the NDIS looks at, not the diagnosis alone.

Support might include assistance with daily living on high pain days, transport to medical appointments, help with household tasks, and community participation support.

If endometriosis is significantly affecting your daily life and you have not explored NDIS eligibility, it is worth a conversation. Our team can help.

Women living with disability often have to fight harder to be heard.

In medical settings. In planning meetings. In support relationships that do not always account for what it means to be a woman navigating disability.

At We Care Providers, we take the time to understand the full picture. That means listening to what a participant tells us about their experience, not just what a file note says. It means understanding that a woman managing a psychosocial disability alongside caring responsibilities has a very different daily reality to what a generic care plan might assume.

Good support starts with being seen. We are here for that.

Women's Health Week starts today, and this year we are thinking about women with disability.

Women make up around half of all NDIS participants, yet research consistently shows they face additional barriers that are rarely talked about. Autism and ADHD are diagnosed later in women than in men, often after years of masking and misdiagnosis. Psychosocial disability linked to trauma and domestic violence affects women at disproportionate rates. And many women are managing their own disability while simultaneously carrying the informal caring load for others.

Good disability support for women needs to acknowledge these realities. Not treat every participant the same regardless of their experience.

At We Care Providers, we are committed to providing support that sees the whole person. This week and every week.

Good support does not stop at the participant.

Behind many of the people we work with is a family doing everything they can, coordinating appointments, advocating loudly, researching providers, preparing for plan reviews, and managing the emotional weight of a caring role that does not come with a job description.

At We Care Providers, we work with the whole support network. That means communicating clearly and consistently with families, not just with participants. Being available when questions come up, not just during business hours. And making sure that carers and family members feel like partners in the process, not people who are kept informed after decisions have already been made.

If you are a family member who has ever felt overlooked by a provider, we want to show you what a different approach looks like.

6am. The alarm goes off and the day begins.

By 7am, a support worker can be at their first participant's home, helping them get ready for the day. Not rushing, not doing everything for them, but working alongside them at their pace, building the routine that makes the morning feel manageable.

By 10am, they may be supporting a community outing. A cafΓ© visit that took 3 weeks to feel comfortable. Today it feels easy.

By 2pm, they might be helping with meal preparation, prompting the steps rather than doing them, because independence is built one task at a time.

No two days look the same. The participants are different, the goals are different, the challenges are different. What stays constant is the commitment to showing up well for every single person.

Support work is one of the most meaningful jobs there is. At We Care Providers, we are proud of the team we have built.

Could assistive technology make a difference to someone you support?

Assistive technology, or AT, refers to any equipment or device that helps a person with disability do things more independently. It ranges from low-cost items like non-slip mats and grab rails, to sophisticated communication devices, powered wheelchairs, and smart home technology.

Under the NDIS, AT is funded through the Capital Supports budget. For lower-cost items, funding can often be accessed relatively quickly. For higher-cost items, an assessment from an occupational therapist or other allied health professional is usually required to support the request.

The right piece of assistive technology can be genuinely life-changing. It can restore independence, reduce the need for support worker hours, and open up parts of daily life that were previously inaccessible.

If you think AT could help someone you support and are not sure how to access funding for it, reach out to our team.

Spring is here, and getting out and about is one of the best things you can do for connection, confidence, and community participation. A little planning makes all the difference.

Here are some tips for making outings feel easy and enjoyable for everyone:

1️⃣ Check accessibility before you go. Look up whether the venue has step-free access, accessible bathrooms, and parking close to the entrance. Most venues list this on their website.
2️⃣ Plan around energy levels. For participants who experience fatigue, mid-morning is often the sweet spot. Avoid peak times where crowds and noise can feel overwhelming.
3️⃣ Bring familiar comfort items. A favourite snack, a sensory toy, or a familiar playlist can make a new environment feel much safer for participants who find change difficult.
4️⃣ Have a quiet exit plan. Know where you can step away if things feel too much, and let the participant know that leaving early is always an option. It reduces anxiety before you even arrive.
5️⃣ Start small and build. A short cafΓ© visit is just as valuable as a full day out. Regular, positive outings build confidence over time.

If community access is part of your NDIS plan and you are not sure how to use it, reach out to our team.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

A day to acknowledge lives lost. To sit with those who are grieving. And to reduce the stigma that still surrounds substance use and addiction.

For many people living with psychosocial disability, substance use is part of a complex picture. Trauma, mental health conditions, isolation, and chronic pain are all risk factors. Judgement and stigma are barriers to getting help.

Today is not about blame. It is about understanding that people in crisis deserve compassion, not shame. And that the right support, whether through the NDIS, mental health services, or community programs, can make a real difference.

If you or someone you know is navigating psychosocial disability and needs support, our team is here.

Spring is almost here, and Melbourne comes alive this time of year. For NDIS participants, it is a great time to get back outside and make the most of community access support.

Here are some ideas for the warmer months ahead:

1️⃣ The Royal Botanic Gardens are fully accessible and free to enter. A walk through the gardens with a support worker is a simple, sensory-rich outing that suits a wide range of participants.
2️⃣ Melbourne's weekend markets, from the Queen Victoria Market to local neighbourhood markets, are social, stimulating, and easy to navigate with support.
3️⃣ AFL finals season is upon us. Many clubs offer accessible seating and companion card options, making the footy one of Melbourne's most inclusive outings.
4️⃣ Neighbourhood houses and community centres across Melbourne's north and west run spring programs including art classes, cooking groups, and social clubs, many of which welcome participants with a support worker.
5️⃣ The Essendon Farmers Market, close to our office, runs regularly and is a relaxed, accessible option for participants in Melbourne's north and west.

If community access is part of your NDIS plan and you are not sure how to use it this spring, reach out to our team.
