In relation to our recent posts regarding calf strength and calf raises we thought we would share this Calf Raise App by Kim Hebert-Losier. It is an excellent tool to measure calf raise performance from your own iPhone or iPad and is designed by physiotherapists and sports scientists.

The app allows you to perform a Calf Raise/Heel raise test which is often used in clinical practice. It enables the assessment of your calf strength and endurance and involves going up and down on your toes as many times as you can. It can assist in detecting differences between left and right, as well as injury deficits.

It also:
•Provides a metronome to assist with pacing.
•Measures power and work with an external load by simply entering your additional load used to test strength over endurance.
•Tracks the path of your heel raise via a circle placed on your heel as seen in the image above to get your total and peak height.

During these unprecedented times, it is important to keep moving, stay positive, be happy and show kindness to those around us.

With gym facilities currently closed and sport put on hold, many of us have increased our walking/running and have transitioned to at-home exercise programs.

How many can you do?

The single-leg heel raise test is often used in clinical practice to assess the strength and endurance of plantar flexors (i.e. calf muscles).

The normative values displayed in the table above are based on single-leg heel raises performed to fatigue on a 10 degree incline. Heel raises were paced by a metronome at 60bpm with the heel lifting on the first beat and lowering on the second.

It is importance to remember that s*x, age, BMI and activity levels will influence an individual’s result. There is no MAGIC number that will suit everyone.

Strength Training for Runners: Calf Raises

Strength training plays an essential role in injury prevention and optimising performance.

Research has suggested 30-50% of all sporting injuries are related to overuse tendon problems. Achilles tendinopathies account for 11% of all running injuries and are the most common tendon pathology affecting the lower limb.

Calf raises are an essential component of any runner’s strength program. Weakened calf muscles can place excessive amounts of stress on structures including your Achilles tendon.

TIPS:
• Work the muscles to fatigue, don’t push through pain.
• Reps and sets vary depending on your strength.
• Try and start with 3 sets of 8-12 reps with rest of 1-2 minutes.
• For runners, aim to build to 3 sets of 25-30 single leg calf raises.
• Ideally leave a rest day between strength training and running.
• You can progress each exercise by adding dumbbells or weighted backpacks. @ Essendon Foot Clinic

Australian football is a high contact sport. Injuries can result from tackling, kicking, running, handballing, marking and constant physical competition for the ball during play or training.

Injuries are more likely to occur in your first 4 weeks of the playing season, therefore it is vital adequate training prior to competition is completed to ensure readiness for play.

Pre-season is an important time to improve and consolidate strength, flexibility, stamina, agility and balance. Footwear, including both your runners and football boots play a significant role in injury prevention and performance.
