The 3 Common Push Up Mistakes and How to Fix Them.
As a team we are currently enrolled in the Push Up Challenge, raising valuable funds for Lifeline.
We have already completed more than 3000 pushups or alternative exercises between us.

Although push ups are a common and accessible exercise for everyone, there are 3 common mistakes many people make when it comes to set up and ex*****on.

These can potentially reduce the benefit of the exercise in building upper body strength, and also lead to injury in the neck, shoulders or back.

In the video above, Graham explains the 3 mistakes and how to fix them, relating to:
1. Set up, in particular hand position.
2. Activation of the correct muscles.
3. Spinal control and alignment.

If you are doing the Push Up Challenge also, this will ensure your form is good.... we've got your back!

A huge thank you to every one who has donated to our team fund raising page already!

As Physios, we work hard to get people back to doing the things they love in the shortest possible time after an injury or painful condition. To do this we have to address one of the biggest myths that most people believe, that really holds them back…
❌ Mistake: Thinking Pain = Damage
A lot of people assume that pain always means something is broken, torn, or still healing. It’s completely understandable—if something hurts, your brain’s natural reaction is to protect it.
But here’s the truth: Pain doesn’t always mean there’s damage.
In fact, pain is a protective response, not a damage report. Once an injury has healed—or even while it’s healing—your nervous system can stay on high alert, continuing to send pain signals even when the tissues are no longer the issue.

⚠️ Consequence: People Put Up With Pain For Way Too Long
The problem with believing pain = damage is that people often wait…and wait… and wait.
They stop doing the things they love—gardening, walking, running, sport, playing with the kids—thinking they need to rest until the pain goes away.
But in many cases, that pain could be treated and reduced right now with the right mindset and approach.
Why does this happen?
Usually it’s as simple as a lack of understanding… of how the nervous system and the body truly works. This creates limiting beliefs … which produce limiting actions… or no action at all!

✅ The NWPG Fix: A Whole Body Approach
Here’s what we do differently:
We look beyond just the site of pain and ask, what’s the body doing to protect itself?
Sometimes, the real issue isn’t where it hurts. It might be:
A stiff joint or a muscle knot above or below the injury
Weak or inhibited muscles trying to overcompensate
A nervous system still in “danger mode”
Neural tension causing muscles to guard and amplifying pain signals
By treating the underlying protective responses—and restoring healthy movement—we help people get out of pain faster, even while the tissues are still recovering.

💡 You Don’t Have to Wait
So if you’ve been putting life on pause, waiting for the pain to pass—don’t!
You can start moving better, feeling better, and getting back to your hobbies sooner than you think.
👣 Pain is complex. Recovery doesn’t have to be…

Let’s take a whole-body approach and get you back to doing what you love.

What I didn’t learn at uni changed the way I treat patients as a physio.

One of the biggest things I realised after graduating is that the real driver of an injury isn’t always where you feel the pain.

For example, neck pain may actually be driven by issues in the upper back, shoulder, or elsewhere in the body. That’s why many people can get temporary relief from treatment only for the pain to come back in a few months.

I also learned that exercise alone isn’t always enough to solve an injury completely. If the real cause hasn’t been addressed first, exercises can sometimes be ineffective or even aggravating. That’s where a detailed assessment and hands-on treatment can help reduce pain, improve movement, and prepare the body for exercise.

At NWPG, I learned a systematic whole-body approach that helps me identify the true driver of pain. Combined with hands-on treatment and the right exercise plan, patients can achieve long-term results.

If your pain keeps returning despite treatment, let’s help you understand and manage your pain in a different way: https://nwpg.com.au/contact

In transpersonal psychology, humans are meaning making machines!
We experience an event, situation or sensation… and then attach a meaning to it.

Our beliefs are convenient assumptions we make based on our perception of the world, that is the meaning we attach to our experiences.
They are neither right or wrong… but our beliefs, particularly about ourselves, can be helpful or harmful.

They are usually made unconsciously and then we look for evidence to support our beliefs in the real world… confirmation bias.
So, for eg, if we think that pain is bad, a sign of tissue damage… we will naturally avoid it, protect ourselves from it, and change our behaviour to get around it.

These limiting beliefs about pain affect our nervous system at a subconscious level… muscles guard to restrict movement, joints stiffen, nerves stop gliding well… and suddenly the pain cycle is reinforced… all from our belief about pain… ie what we make pain mean.

The impact… lasting pain, worsening lifestyle because you stop doing the things you love as you’re fearful of the pain. You get frustrated, irritable… your loved ones notice… relationships suffer… all because of what you’re making your pain mean.

We get it.. people get stuck in a cycle of pain and protection and its hard to break.

The alternative…
Understanding that pain is not a sign of tissue damage in most persistent or chronic pain cases.
If pain was a sign of damage in all cases, we would not see so many disc bulges, tears and facet joint OA on the scans of people with no pain( this is well researched and documented).

Pain is a warning from the brain that needs to be put into context… or recontextualised.
If pain is not a sign of tissue damage… what is available for you? How could this change your thoughts about your pain? And change your behaviour…

This is not as easy as it sounds…it takes time and coaching to work through.
Our approach not only works with the protective responses your subconscious mind has created in your body… but the thoughts and beliefs that created them.

When body and mind work together … amazing things can happen…
