People usually come to Byron Bay Equine Therapy & Psychology with a simple question:

β€œWould this kind of support work for me or my child?”

Fair question.

The practice offers psychology, counselling, occupational therapy, and equine-assisted therapy for children, teens, adults, families, and NDIS participants.

That might mean support for anxiety, stress, trauma, emotional regulation, behavioural challenges, neurodivergence, burnout, or just feeling stuck and needing a different kind of space to work things through.

Some people feel comfortable talking things out. Some settle better outside. Some kids open up more when they can move, explore, or spend time near the horses.

The team will help you figure out what kind of support makes sense.

Meet Clara Tommasone, Occupational Therapist at Byron Bay Equine Therapy & Psychology.

Clara is available now on Tuesdays and Fridays and works with children aged 0–14 years.

She brings a warm, gentle and practical approach to occupational therapy, combining assessment, treatment and support with nature-based and equine-assisted activities. Her work focuses on helping children build confidence, independence, regulation and everyday skills in a setting that feels supportive and engaging.

Clara supports children with a range of diagnoses and developmental needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Coordination Disorder, intellectual difficulties, and degenerative and genetic conditions.

She also believes strongly in working alongside families. For Clara, therapy is most effective when the people around the child are included in the process, from understanding the child’s needs to planning goals and supporting progress at home and in daily life.

Her focus is on practical, meaningful support that fits into the child’s real world, not just the therapy session.

Clara is currently available on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Why horses, though? 🐴

It's a question we get a lot, and here's how we think about it.

Horses spend their whole lives reading body language, breathing, and tension. Practically, that means they respond to what a person is actually carrying that day, not just what they're saying out loud. A kid can arrive having had a rough morning and not need to explain any of it, the horse has usually clocked that something's off before a word gets said.

Then there's just the nature side of things, separate from the horses entirely. Being outside, on uneven ground, weather doing whatever it wants, animals around that couldn't care less about screens, that alone tends to shift something for a lot of the kids we work with.

None of this replaces the psychology and OT training our team brings into a session; the horses are part of the approach, not the whole of it. But a moment like this one, a kid choosing to lean into a horse's neck for no particular reason, usually says more than most conversations would.

If you're curious whether this style of therapy might be a fit for your child, our practitioners are happy to talk it through with you before you book anything.

The brumbies clock off the same as we do, grazing, wandering, catching some fresh air. Every horse here gets proper downtime built into the day, not just the sessions!

Just like us, they are similar in many different ways!

1. Their nervous system runs on the same basic wiring. Fight, flight, freeze, horses go through it too, and it's visible in their body almost immediately.

2. They read body language before words. A horse will often respond to someone's tension or hesitation before that person's even said a sentence, which tends to be revealing for everyone in the same space.

3. They have individual personalities. Some are bold, some hang back, some are total suck-ups for attention. Kids notice this fast, and it opens up conversations about temperament without it ever feeling like a lecture.

4. They remember emotional experiences, not just events. A horse that's had a rough time with something will carry that association for a long while.

5. They respond to calm, not control. Horses tend to switch off from anyone trying to force an outcome. There's a lesson in there about regulation that applies just as well to people as it does to horses.
They need routine to feel secure.

There's a stretch of this trail I still stop for, even after all this time walking it. 🌳

A lot of what happens on the farm is about just being slow with nature and letting yourself connect with it.

Started as one horse getting all the attention and ended as two horses fighting over it. 🐴🐴

Our brumbies have strong opinions about who deserves a scratch and when, and it usually makes for some pretty joyful chaos.

Exploring nature always seems to bring out a different kind of curiosity.

That’s why we love using outdoor spaces in our work. Nature gives kids room to explore without everything feeling too structured or rushed. It can help with confidence, regulation, sensory processing, and just feeling more comfortable in the moment.

A bit of dirt, a bit of fresh air, and a whole lot of learning happening quietly in the background.

A busy mind can make your whole body feel switched on.

Grounding is one way to come back a little. Nothing dramatic. Just small signals that tell your body, β€œOkay, we’re here.”

Try pressing your feet into the ground. Look around and name a few things you can see. Make your exhale a little slower than your inhale.

Simple stuff, but it can help when stress, anxiety, or overwhelm starts taking over.

Save this one for a day when your brain has too many tabs open.
