It's Men's Health Week, so its a great time to check in on your brothers, uncles, and cousins and see how they're doing 👬

Two in three men wait too long to see a GP if something is bothering them, which is why VAHS encourages blokes to get their annual health check, to catch any health issues before they become a bigger problem 🩺

We also know men's health is much more than physical, it's what's going on inside emotionally and spiritually, which is why our Men's Group gathers every Tuesday for didge/yidaki sessions, and fortnightly on Wednesdays for yarning circles, giving brothers a Culturally safe space to get together 🪃

Have you been to our Men's Group yet? New faces are always welcome, join the VAHS Urban Djarmbi Men's Unit Facebook group for more info 🖱️

Did you know that bowel cancer is the third most common cancer among Mob? 🤔

It's also among the most treatable of cancers, and if found early, 90 per cent of bowel cancers can be successfully treated 🩺

That's why our friends at NACCHO Aboriginal Health Australia are telling Mob to trust their gut, keep an eye out for symptoms, and reduce your risk of bowel cancer this Bowel Cancer Awareness Month:

💩 Have you noticed any changes in your bowel habits? A change in consistency, presence of blood, pain, or lumps, unexpected weight loss, and feeling tired for no reason can all be symptoms of bowel cancer

🏃 Maintain a healthy weight and regular exercise to reduce your risk of bowel cancer

🥗 Eat a balanced diet of healthy foods

🚭 Quit smoking and cut back on alcohol

📮 If you're aged 45-49, yarn with your health worker about the National Cancer Screening Register to receive a free bowel screening kit in the mail

❗HEALTH ALERT - DIPTHERIA OUTBREAK❗

You Mob may or may not have heard about a diptheria outbreak in Australia, including in remote Aboriginal Communities in Northern Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia, so we've compiled some info on how best to avoid getting sick ⤵️

While there are no reported active diptheria cases in the state of Victoria, it's still better to be safe than sorry. This is also the case for other winter illnesses such as colds, flus, and COVID-19 💉

"Like rivers flow and stars shine, we exist to be, to feel, to grow, to wonder. We don't need to prove our worth - being alive is already enough.

"Many Indigenous teachings remind us that we belong simply because we are." ⛰️🌌

This was the quote of the week for our Women's Group before beginning an afternoon creating beautiful art and craft pieces 🎨

VAHS recently hosted a possum skin cloak workshop for our Stolen Generation group, connecting with Culture in a supportive space 🌺

Aunty Daria from our Bringing Them Home team led the session alongside Community and Cultural Program Facilitators Luke and Saoirse, with participants collaborating to create a shared cloak 🖤💛❤️

For more information about our Stolen Gen group and similar workshops, contact Aunty Daria on 0423 859 525 ☎️

Families participating in VAHS' inaugural Our Tribe program have finished their beautiful possum skin cloaks, decorated and personalised with artwork significant to them 🪡

Our Tribe brings families together to learn about their Culture, strengthening their connections with one another, and share their stories with Community 🖤💛❤️

Now our families have a special piece of their Cultural identity to keep for themselves and pass down to the next generation and precious memories of the creative process 🥰

VAHS is proud to be leading and partnering with ACCHOs across Australia to roll out this powerful, community-led Flip The V**e week campaign between 15-21 June 2026. A week dedicated solely to young mob to help them stay v**e-free for good. Together, we’re raising awareness about the harms of va**ng and supporting mob to prevent uptake or quit using va**ng products.

We're proud to work and collaborate with the following ACCHO's; Nunkuwarrin Yunti of SA, Danila Dilba Health Service, Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service, Flinders Island Aboriginal Association Inc, Galambila Aboriginal Health Service and to our existing ACCHO's partners across Victoria

By working alongside Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations nationwide, we’re building on the success of Flip The V**e campaign in 2025, now expanding the initiative nationally.

This dedicated week is about driving a strong community movement to tackle v**e use in our young people, while encouraging and supporting mob to stay v**e-free. It also marks a world first—a national week of awareness and action focused on preventing and reducing va**ng.

Let’s keep the momentum going—have a yarn, support each other, and flip the v**e for good between 15–21 June. 💬💪🏽

👉 Get involved: Encourage and engage a mate or family member to quit va**ng or Talk to your local ACCHO or call Quitline to tackle your own va**ng behavior, and share this message with your community. Access the support available and be part of the movement to flip the v**e for good.
