Dr Jarmon Lees, Head of SVI’s Cardiometabolic Disease Lab, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Victorian Young Tall Poppy Science Award.

Presented by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science, the awards recognise outstanding early-career researchers who combine excellence in scientific research with a commitment to engaging the community.

At SVI, Jarmon develops human “mini-hearts” using stem cells to better understand heart disease and accelerate the development of new treatments.

SVI researchers have uncovered a previously unknown process that helps cells repair damage in one of the most active and vulnerable parts of their DNA.

Led by Associate Professor Elaine Sanij and co-authors Dr Ruofei Liu, Dr Jiachen Xuan and Dr Jian Kang, the research shows how a protein called RAD54L helps repair damage in ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA).

When Oona lines up for the Sydney Marathon this August, every one of the 42 kilometres she runs will be for her nephew Noah and every other child living with Fanconi anaemia.

Oona is aiming to raise $21,000 through the challenge, with funds supporting both Fanconi Anaemia Support Australasia and research at SVI. Her goal is to raise $500 for every kilometre of the gruelling 42 km course, helping fund research that is giving families affected by this rare inherited condition new hope.

As we mark , we're celebrating the next generation of researchers working towards a future free from type 1 diabetes.

Dr Kylie Jevon has been awarded the 2026 Helen Thomas Early Career Fellowship in Type 1 Diabetes, recognising the outstanding potential of her research investigating a novel immunotherapy approach and honouring the enduring legacy of Professor Helen Thomas.

Supported by SVI, Diabetes Victoria, the Australian Diabetes Society and Breakthrough T1D Australia, and the fellowship will support Kylie's project exploring how T cell exhaustion could be harnessed to treat type 1 diabetes, helping lay the groundwork for new treatments that target the underlying immune cause of the disease.

This National Diabetes Week, we're celebrating research that's helping create a future where type 1 diabetes could one day be prevented before it starts.

Associate Professor Mark Chong has been awarded a Breakthrough T1D INSPIRE grant to advance the development of an innovative mRNA vaccine designed to retrain the immune system to stop attacking the body's own insulin-producing cells.

While there's still more work ahead, this research represents an exciting step towards changing the future of type 1 diabetes.

The BRAIx randomised controlled trials are now underway, marking a major milestone in the development of AI-powered breast cancer screening.

Led by Associate Professor Helen Frazer and Associate Professor Davis McCarthy, the BRAIx project brings together clinical expertise and cutting-edge artificial intelligence to improve breast cancer detection.

More than 45,000 BreastScreen Victoria clients have now participated in the randomised controlled trial, with over 21,000 mammograms assessed using the BRAIx AI reader.

The study is now expanding to BreastScreen SA in South Australia, marking another important milestone as the technology is evaluated across different settings.

The Australian-developed BRAIx AI reader was created through a partnership between SVI, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, BreastScreen Victoria, the University of Melbourne and the University of Adelaide, with funding from the Medical Research Future Fund and philanthropic support from MECCA Brands M-POWER.

Each year in Australia, about 1,000 Australian women lose their lives to ovarian cancer. While advances in treatment have improved outcomes for many patients, ovarian cancers can eventually stop responding to therapies, leaving women with limited options.

Thanks to the generosity of the 5point Foundation, SVI researcher Dr Ruofei Liu will continue searching for new solutions as the 2026 recipient of the Christine Martin Fellowship.

SVI has secured landmark funding to progress a gene editing program aimed at transforming treatment for rare bone marrow failure syndromes through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) Stem Cell Therapies Mission.

The project, ‘NEXTPAGE – Next-generation EXperimental cell Therapies in Patients, using Advanced Gene Editing’, is led by Associate Professor Andrew Deans, Head of SVI’s Genome Stability Lab, and brings together researchers, clinicians, industry partners and patient advocacy organisations from Australia and around the world.
