Today is National Sorry Day. A day of acknowledgment since 1998 for the trauma and grief experienced by the stolen generations of indigenous Australians.

The stolen generations were the children forcibly removed from their families, communities and culture by government and church from the late 1800’s until the 1970’s

The lasting and devastating effects of trauma on the human nervous system can have an effect for multiple generations. This has not only a psychological impact but also a physical effect on health.

I see the long term effects of trauma everyday in my work yet there seems to be no end to the infliction of trauma. People of colour and women wear this wound much more frequently

As an AuDHDer myself I take a different approach to care than many medical practitioners. My approach doesn’t suit everyone as I often share experiences from my own life as part of the consultation but for many neurodivergent patients it is a refreshing and affirming experience.

Neuroaffirming requires the de-pathologising of the ND experience without delegitimising the difficulties

It requires a shedding of one’s ego and internalised ableism that can sometimes accompany normal doctor patient relationships.

It takes the patient on as a genuine partner in their health journey

I have learned just as much from my patients as they have (hopefully) learned from me

I have worked hard to create a safe sensory space but am fully aware that it is not perfect.

Let me know what you appreciate in your own medical experiences. What has worked for you? What has made you feel unsafe?

Yesterday 12/5/26 marked the international awareness day for myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

This annual observance is held on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a founder of modern nursing.

Why? Like so many empaths: She was believed to have had an ME/CFS-like illness for the last 50 years of her life and often worked while confined to bed.

A condition characterised by post-exertional malaise is often associated with underlying chronic inflammation and pain.

The move to go back to the use of ME acknowledges this inflammatory process rather than implying that this is just about being tired all the time

Many neurodivergent people are at risk of MECFS especially in a (health care) system that has increasingly less time to acknowledge and appreciate the whole person and the associated health conditions that can go alongside ND

Autism Spectrum Australia has developed an exquisitely neuroaffirming birth plan template.
So many women are discouraged from making a detailed birth plan with the implication that over planning predicts a higher chance of disappointment.

In my experience working through a neuroaffirming lens is that the more we can help to answer questions and affirm choice through detailed discussion the greater the trust and the lower the chance of perceived trauma in the birthing experience.

Birth and matrescence is an extraordinarily sensory experience.
Neurodivergent women often need to know a great deal of detail. We need to know about all the possible “what ifs” not because we are anxious (although this can be a comorbidity) but because of the need for bodily autonomy.

Many clinicians find this an affront to their expertise but in reality if we cannot openly discuss our patients concerns then trust can never be attained.

Trigger warning: Discussion of Medical Based Trauma

As a gynaecologist a mother a patient I am deeply disturbed by the recent media coverage of endometriosis care in Melbourne

It would be very easy for any former patient to be swimming in a sea of confusion and overwhelming emotions.

Let me be very clear. This is not OK. This is a systemic failure. This is not indicative of a widespread issue amongst gynaecologists. This is not the kind of care we would advocate for our patients.

I am grateful and applaud my colleagues who dared to speak out against medical misogyny and the systemic failures of our institutions

But it is the fearlessness and fierceness of these patients who shared their stories with such vulnerability that we should applaud the most. My heart broke for one young autistic woman who was blaming herself. It should not have come to this

If this has affected you. If this has brought up unresolved medical trauma please take care of yourself and let someone know you are feeling vulnerable tonight

I love this summary! This is exactly my experience with POTS and often I am diagnosing POTS for the first time in pregnancy.

If you are struggling and don’t have access to help what measures might help at home?
Over the counter anti-histamines such as loratadine plus doxylamine at night to reduce mast cell activity.

Increase salt intake and sip frequently on fluids including electrolytes. Try slushies if water is not palatable. Aim for 2-3L per day

Compression tights can help keep your blood flowing back towards the heart

If needed IV fluids may be needed and possibly prescribed medication

Obstetricians trained in hidden illnesses like myself are more than happy to discuss your pregnancy plans and manage your pregnancy alongside your specialists

Ever been told that you just need to be more mindful? To spend more time meditating 🧘 but just can’t get your brain to be quiet?? You are definitely not alone!!

The health and longevity benefits of mindfulness and meditation are proven but for neurodivergent individuals it’s easier said than done!

This brilliant article from really helps us to feel that our brains are not broken nor not capable of meditating.

Living a lifetime in flight or flight mode means it takes practice and patience. And sometimes a focal point or direction. Over time it gets easier and your ability to regulate improves.
