So delighted to see this as RCOG policy, and much appreciation to authors, especially obstetrician Andrew Weeks who has been advocating for 'optimal cord management' for decades..
"The minutes after birth are now recognised as a time of remarkable change within the baby and we have learned that interfering with this natural process can cause potential harm...
Early cord clamping will result in the baby having a lower blood volume as it is estimated that a baby at full term will receive around 30% of its total blood volume from placental transfer via the umbilical cord. The decision on timing to clamp the umbilical cord should be based on observations of the baby, its heart rate and breathing rather than a predefined interval after birth. Also, the palpable pulsation of the cord is unrelated to the blood flowing back and forth therefore it should not be used to guide the time when clamping occurs. Clamping at the placental end allows some blood in the cord to transfer to the newborn. There are other benefits to the baby from the placental transfer of blood such as transfer of stem cells."

"The people who claim that induction leads to fewer caesareans are quoting the results of one study, the ARRIVE Trial, which was flawed, and did not reflect real world maternity care.
In the real world, having your labour induced increases your chance of having a caesarean." Thanks much sarawickham.com for comprehensive summary of real-world studies. https://www.sarawickham.com/research-updates/induction-increases-caesarean/

Matresence Massage ❤️

This coming May is the 18th anniversary of me stepping into Matresence. My daughter, Ella, made me a mum on the 17th May 2008. In celebrating 18 years of Matresence I offer the first 18 Mothers to book a pregnancy or postpartum massage in May an 18% discount on a 90 minute treatment. That's $98.40 for 90 minutes of being celebrated, nurtured and rejuvenated.

Over the years I've treated hundreds of mums to connect with their bodies, to adjust to the epic changes our bodies experience in pregnancy and postpartum and also supported the most sacred of experiences...Matresence.

If I had my time again I would have loved myself more and believed that I deserved to be celebrated and nurtured. I'd love to do that for you.

Message me to book your Matresence Massage

It’s with deep sadness and shock that I’m sharing this. Carley was a Doula client of mine. I supported her and her Husband Bryden and daughter Elsie to welcome Albert into the world in 2020.

Carley was so funny! Her sense of humour often having me in fits of laughter. She saw the best in people and had an enormous amount of gratitude and love for everyone, especially her family.

Many of my homebirth families who have young children enjoyed little birth kits that featured some of Carley’s eco toys from
Her business Beadie Bug Play.

A Go Fund Me has been set up for Carley’s family to lessen the burden of her unexpected passing. Bryden also has two beautiful young children, one with complex and fragile medical needs, to support.

Please donate if you feel you can.

This cord is still full of blood.

Blood that belonged to the baby.

Blood that was meant to finish transfusing back into the newborn after birth.

Instead, it was cut short.

The placenta and cord hold up to ⅓ of a baby’s total blood volume.

That blood carries oxygen, iron, stem cells, and immune support that the baby is supposed to receive in the first minutes of life.

When a cord like this is clamped too early, that transfusion is interrupted.

And the baby simply loses it.

The question we should be asking is: Why are we still rushing the one transfusion every newborn is born waiting for?

This blood belongs to the baby!

Not rushed systems.

Not protocols.

Not “this is how we’ve always done it.”

Not “30 seconds is long enough.”

Imagine interrupting someone’s blood transfusion after 30 seconds and calling it ‘standard practice.’

Babies need their blood!
