Today, SJ and Sarelle had the pleasure of volunteering their time at the Red Bend Catholic College Careers Day, speaking with Year 10 students about career pathways, study, opportunities and the many different directions a career can take. ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

It was a great opportunity to share real-life experiences, talk honestly about the twists and turns that can come with choosing a career, and remind students that they donโ€™t need to have everything figured out at 15.

We loved chatting with the students, hearing about their interests and future plans, and hopefully giving them a little encouragement to stay curious, keep learning and be open to the opportunities that come their way.

A big thank you to RBCC for inviting us along and for creating such a valuable experience for local students. ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’› Meet the Team โ€“ Nicola ๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŒฟ
Community Support Worker

Weโ€™re excited to introduce Nicola, who has recently stepped into the role of Community Support Worker with Yoorana Gunya.

Nicola is passionate about supporting individuals and families across Forbes and Parkes who are experiencing domestic and family violence. Her approach is compassionate, culturally safe and trauma-informed, with a strong focus on advocacy, empowerment and helping clients create positive change for themselves and their families.

What do you enjoy most about working at YG?

โ€œWhat I enjoy most is how welcoming and supportive everyone has been. Although Iโ€™ve worked for Yoorana Gunya at Binaal Billa for the past three years and already knew many of the team, everyone has been incredibly supportive and has provided valuable guidance as I transitioned into my new role.โ€

How do you look after your wellbeing?

โ€œYouโ€™ll usually find me spending weekends with my little family at the soccer, baking and cooking, or making the most of the beautiful spring afternoons walking or riding around the block. And after a busy week, Iโ€™m just as happy curled up on the lounge watching an episode or three of Hawaii Five-Oโ€ฆ for the third time!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

Please join us in welcoming Nicola into her new role at Yoorana Gunya. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“š Indigenous Literacy Day

Today we celebrate First Nations stories, cultures and languages through Indigenous Literacy Day, an important national celebration created by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

This yearโ€™s featured story, Hello, Hello, was written and illustrated by students from the remote communities of Laverton, Menzies and Tjuntjuntjara.

Kristy and Gemma joined in the celebrations with the children, creating Indigenous flags and sharing a beautiful activity centred around culture, creativity and connection. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค

A lovely way to celebrate the strength of storytelling, language and culture with our young people. ๐Ÿ“•โœจ

๐Ÿ’™ Have you received a bowel screening kit but arenโ€™t sure what to do next?

You donโ€™t have to work it out alone. Our Yoorana Gunya team can:

โœ”๏ธ Explain why screening is important
โœ”๏ธ Show you how to collect the samples
โœ”๏ธ Help you complete the test privately at the clinic
โœ”๏ธ Help return your completed kit for testing

When found early, more than 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated.

Eligible Australians aged 45โ€“74 can complete a free bowel screening test every two years. People aged 45โ€“49 can request their first kit, while people aged 50โ€“74 are mailed a kit automatically.

Screening is intended for people without symptoms. If you have noticed bowel changes, bleeding, unexplained weight loss or ongoing abdominal pain, please speak with your GP.

A small test can make a big differenceโ€”for you, your family and your community. Have a yarn with the Yoorana Gunya team if you need support. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒฟ Community Voices at the Centre

Last week, Yoorana Gunya brought community together at the Forbes Scout Hall for an important Community Yarn & Discussion, alongside Three Rivers Assembly and Dubbo Community Housing.

Our YG team were proud to be at the forefront of the conversation, creating a welcoming space for community members to have a yarn, ask questions and share their experiences, concerns and ideas around housing, safety, community needs, support services and pathways to secure housing.

These conversations matter. By listening to the people who know our community best, we can better understand where the gaps are, strengthen connections between services and advocate for practical solutions that respond to what our mob actually needs. ๐Ÿ’›

A big thank you to Three Rivers Assembly, Dubbo Community Housing, Hold Photography, our YG staff and everyone from community who came along and contributed to the discussion.

Strong communities start with listening, connection and working together. ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’› Meet the Team โ€“ Chloe ๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŒฟ

Weโ€™re excited to introduce Chloe, our Executive Services Administration, who brings a warm, organised and supportive approach to the Yoorana Gunya team.

Chloe is passionate about learning and development and enjoys helping others stay organised, manage priorities and work towards their goals.

One of the things Chloe loves most about Yoorana Gunya is the people:

โ€œYG is such a welcoming and vibrant workplace. Everyone brings their own charisma and energy, and the positive atmosphere within the team is really inspiring.โ€

Outside of work, Chloe loves packing up the caravan for weekends away with her family, getting lost in a good book and making sure she sets aside at least 10 minutes each day to sit down and enjoy a coffee. โ˜•๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿš

Please join us in giving Chloe a warm Yoorana Gunya welcome! ๐Ÿ’›

SJ was on food duty today, treating the Forbes High School Girls Empowerment Group to a delicious homemade morning tea! ๐Ÿฅฃ๐Ÿ’—

Stevie then delivered a meaningful and empowering session about setting healthy boundaries, staying safe on social media, understanding what is and isnโ€™t appropriate to share online, and exploring the important question: โ€œWhat makes you, you?โ€

It is such a privilege to spend time with this beautiful group of young girlsโ€”creating a safe space where they can learn, ask questions, build confidence and feel supported.

Every conversation is another opportunity to help our girls recognise their worth, trust their voice and feel empowered to make safe, confident choices. ๐Ÿ’œโœจ
