We can often minimise our experience into feeling “tired” or “stressed” but its somatic and physical effects go deeper, influencing emotional, cognitive, and physical states.

The key experiences being disconnection, emotional numbness, and a sense of functioning on autopilot.

Recognising and tuning into these cues in our NS is the first step in being able to support our system in where it’s at, with what it needs. These cues signal a nervous system that is under pressure and in need of safety, support, and slowing down.

Neuroception, as part of the Polyvagal Theory, is the brain’s way of constantly scanning the environment for cues of safety or danger, even below the level of conscious thought. This process is deeply tied to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which governs the body’s stress response.

When neuroception detects safety, it allows the ventral vagal complex (part of the parasympathetic nervous system) to activate, promoting a state of calm, social engagement, and physiological relaxation. In contrast, when neuroception detects danger, the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for the fight-or-flight response) or the dorsal vagal complex (associated with shutdown or freeze responses) can then become activated.

When we are faced with lack of emotional safety and support, our system may move to states of dissociation or resort to emotional numbing, creating a barrier between ourselves and our emotional pain.

We rely heavily on our primary caregivers for emotional security, safety and attunement — when we encounter emotional adversity such as emotional neglect, trauma or misattunemnet — we may reflexively and instinctively disconnect from our internal experience as a protective measure. This disconnect serves as a coping mechanism to seperate ourselves from overwhelming emotional distress.

When working with the mind|body and healing past experiences of trauma there are several components to this process - nervous system regulation and attunement, self-connection and embodiment, working with and integrating parts of us that are holding onto survival roles, and emotional healing.

Until we are able to establish and create safety in the nervous system, we won’t be able to work with the parts of us holding onto past experiences of trauma, emotional suppression, and the reprocessing of past traumas. If our nervous system is in an active state of survival, we cannot engage in these key components of healing. This is why stabilisation in the nervous system and mind|body must happen prior to reprocessing and moving towards any traumatic material. Building on in internal and external resources to support the integration of traumatic wounds and experiences, the discharge of traumatic stress, and the regulation of emotional pain and suppression.

This process requires patience, connection/co-regulation, attunement. As we learn to hold space for our emotionally traumatised parts, we can then soften our defences, allowing these parts of us to be integrated and to release their need for protective or survival-based adaptations.
