🌸 FOOD & MOOD: A LITTLE TASTE OF SPRING 🍓

Spring has arrived in Melbourne! As the days get brighter, it’s a lovely time to enjoy fresh flavours and the pleasure of eating something you like.

Looking for a little inspiration?

🍓 Add some fruit to your breakfast or enjoy it on its own.
🥣 Try yoghurt with fruit, nuts or seeds for an easy snack.
🥕 Enjoy vegetables in a sandwich, a warm meal or with your favourite dip.
🌿 Take your lunch outside or share a snack and a chat with someone.

Fresh, frozen and tinned foods all have a place. Choose what suits your tastes, budget and needs—simple and convenient counts.

We know food can sometimes feel complicated, and shopping or preparing meals can be hard when you’re not feeling your best. There’s no need for a perfect plate. You deserve nourishment, enjoyment and kindness, whatever your body size or relationship with food. 💚

Food is one part of caring for your wellbeing, alongside connection, rest and the support that’s right for you.

🌼 This spring, what’s one food or flavour you’re looking forward to enjoying?

Recovery from mental health doesn't happen in isolation. Connection with others is key.

Research has consistently shown that having a strong connection with community, and supportive relationships can improve wellbeing and build confidence.

At Mentis Assist we believe recovery happens in communities, not just clinics. Whether it's joining one of our groups, meeting with one of our workers, learning a new skill, or reconnecting with old hobbies, every connection can make a difference.

The next conversation you have, the next connection you make, could be the beginning of something life-changing.

LONELINESS AWARENESS WEEK AUSTRALIA
3–9 August 2026

Every connection starts with someone reaching out.
Feeling connected isn't just about being around other people, it's about creating places where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and included.

A simple conversation, an invitation for a coffee, saving someone a seat, smiling at a neighbour, or welcoming a new face into a group can make a lasting difference. Small acts of kindness and inclusion help build stronger communities where people feel they belong.

This Loneliness Awareness Week, let's all take a moment to reach out and make space for meaningful connection, at home, at work, at school, and throughout our communities. đź’™ Who could you reach out to this week?

Mentis Assist has a range of psychosocial support programs that can connect you to our group programs or to groups within the community.

What does culturally safe care mean?

At Mentis Assist, culturally safe care means providing support that respects who you are, where you come from, what matters to you, and how your experiences have shaped your wellbeing.

Culture can include many things, connection to Country, language, family, community, spirituality, identity, traditions, values, lived experience, migration history, faith, gender, sexuality, disability and personal beliefs.

Culturally safe care means you should feel respected, listened to and free from judgement when accessing support.

For us, this means we aim to:

• Listen without making assumptions
• Respect your identity, culture, values and lived experience
• Ask what is important to you and your support needs
• Work alongside you, your family, carers or community, where you choose
• Support access to interpreters or culturally appropriate services when needed
• Acknowledge the ongoing impacts of discrimination, racism, stigma, trauma and exclusion
• Continue learning, reflecting and improving how we provide care

At Mentis Assist, culturally safe care is not about expecting people to fit into our services. It is about shaping our support around each person, so they feel seen, respected and heard.

Everyone deserves mental health support that feels safe, inclusive and respectful.

🎨 Exciting news for our Creative Possibilities art group!

Mentis Assist has received a $5,000 grant through Metro Trains’ Moving Melbourne Community Grants Program. Our application was one of only 14 successful projects selected from over 120 submissions.

The application was developed and submitted by Deb and Kerry, Mental Health Practitioners in our Early Intervention Psychosocial Support Response program. We are incredibly proud of their initiative and commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for our clients.

Last Thursday, Kerry accepted the award on behalf of Mentis Assist at the presentation ceremony. She was joined by our Director of Operations and Business Development, Jayne, and EIPSR practitioner Jo, who has also been instrumental in supporting the art group. Deb was unfortunately unable to attend as she is currently on leave.

The funding will enable approximately 20 participants to build their confidence, creativity and social connections through art, culminating in a public exhibition at Cube 37 in Frankston.

A heartfelt thank you to Metro Trains for supporting this important project—and congratulations to Deb, Kerry and Jo! We can’t wait to see what our talented participants create.

Winter in Melbourne can bring shorter days, colder weather and less motivation to get out and connect. For many people, this time of year can affect mood, energy, sleep and overall wellbeing.

Small, consistent actions can make a real difference:

• Get outside when you can, even for a short walk
• Stay connected with friends, family, neighbours or community groups
• Keep a simple routine around sleep, meals and movement
• Do something enjoyable or calming each day
• Ask for support early if you notice you are feeling overwhelmed, isolated or not yourself

Mental health is something we all need to care for, especially during the colder months when it can be easier to withdraw.

At Mentis Assist, we encourage everyone to check in with themselves and with the people around them. A simple conversation can help someone feel seen, supported and less alone.

If you are finding winter particularly difficult, consider speaking with your GP, a trusted support person, or a mental health professional.

Small steps. Stronger connections. Better wellbeing.

Could your organisation recognise and respond to someone experiencing a mental health crisis?

Mentis Assist offers Mental Health First Aid training through our Allies for Every Life program, helping workplaces, clubs, community groups and frontline organisations build the confidence and skills to support people when it matters most.

This training is designed for people in trusted, community-facing roles, including staff, volunteers, sporting clubs, hospitality teams, community organisations, local businesses and anyone passionate about supporting the wellbeing of others.

Participants learn how to recognise the signs that someone may be experiencing a mental health challenge, respond safely and appropriately, reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking, and connect people with professional support.

By becoming Mental Health First Aid trained, your organisation can help build a stronger web of support across our community, where people live, work, connect and socialise.

Allies for Every Life: empowering communities to recognise, respond and support.
