Typing is becoming an increasingly important skill in today's classrooms, but many parents aren't sure when (or if) their child should start learning.

For children who experience challenges with fine motor control, handwriting speed or legibility, typing can provide another pathway to participate, communicate, and demonstrate their knowledge.

The key is finding the approach that best supports functional written communication while continuing to build underlying skills.

Head to our website to learn more about what you should be working on at home or reach out if you'd like to discuss whether extra support could benefit your child.

Did you know the kitchen is one of OTs' favourite places to support child development?

From mixing batter to following a recipe, cooking gives children a powerful way to practise skills like planning, impulse control, working memory, and task persistence — all while having a blast.

We've just published a new blog breaking down exactly what's happening (developmentally speaking!) when your child helps out in the kitchen — and how you can set them up for success.

Head to our website to read the full blog now!

For over 30 years, we've supported children through their early years, helping them build skills, confidence, and independence.

But what happens when they grow up?

As children become teenagers and young adults, the challenges often change. Navigating study, employment, friendships, community participation, independent living, and everyday responsibilities can bring new opportunities and new hurdles.

That's why we created OTHC Beyond.

OTHC Beyond supports young adults to develop practical life skills, confidence, and independence through individual and community-based occupational therapy. Whether it's catching public transport, preparing for work, managing daily routines, building social connections, or learning to live more independently, we're here to help them take the next step.

Because support shouldn't stop when childhood ends.

Get in touch to learn more about OTHC Beyond and how we're helping young adults thrive.

Need a fun activity that works on processing and sequencing with a fine motor aspect? To do this Listen-to-Draw activity, all you need is a pen and a bit of paper. And the best part about this activity? It can be scaled up and down depending on the age of the child.

What’s your favourite processing activity?

Transitions are a normal part of everyday life. From getting dressed in the morning to turning off the iPad or starting homework, children are constantly moving from one activity to the next.

For some children, however, these moments can feel much harder than they look, any they require more skills than you think too.

This was a hard one to film 😂

OT Jemma has a fun (but difficult) balance activity that will seriously work those core and stability muscles. With just a Bosu ball and any toy, you can have a lot of fun with this one.

What’s your favourite balance activity?

Occupational therapy support doesn’t just happen in the clinic. For many children, teens and families, some of the most meaningful progress happens at home, where daily routines, relationships and challenges naturally occur.

A home visit allows an occupational therapist (OT) to observe your child within their everyday environment and provide practical, tailored strategies that support your family’s goals in real time.

Here’s a quick overview of what home visits look like, who may benefit from them and what to expect during a session.

If you want to learn more or need support in understanding if a home visit could help you and your family, get in touch!
