Before thinking that all Breathalysers are not reliable as stated in the article, ("... Queensland police have warned drivers that they are at risk of being caught drink driving when using devices bought online and in stores.") As the report did not state the brands or price of each of the Breathalysers here are some things to consider when using your online/store bought Breathalyser!

1. Pricing - we all know that what you pay for is what you get. A $20.00 Breathalyser will not give you a reliable reading.

2. Calibration - Breathalysers have sensors to detect the amount of alcohol within your breath, sensors need calibration to ensure ongoing reliability (refer to AS3547)

3. When to test after your most recent drink? QLD Police Traffic Manual 7.3.2.iii states '20 mins since the subject person’s last drink of liquor or aromatic drink, use of mouth spray, or aerosol type medication before using the device on the subject person.'

4. There other factors that can affect your BAC reading including:

- how much alcohol you drink
- the time period over which you consume alcohol
- how much you weigh
- how long since you last ate
- whether you are fit
- how healthy your liver is
- whether you regularly drink
- your mood
- your gender
- the type of drink(s) you consume
