We’re so pleased to see Professor Peter Vuillermin, a valued CIIDIR member, recognised as a finalist in the Health and Education Champion category of the Future Geelong Leadership Awards.

Prof. Vuillermin’s contribution to child health, medical research and the Geelong community has been incredibly significant. Through his work across Deakin University and Barwon Health, he has helped grow regional research, led important studies in child health, and supported and mentored the next generation of clinician-researchers.

It is wonderful to see his dedication and contribution recognised in this way.

CIIDIR is pleased to share an upcoming opportunity from the Victorian Infection and Immunity Network (VIIN)

The 2026 VIIN Young Investigator Symposium, which will be held on Wednesday 25 November 2026 at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Parkville, is currently open for registration and accepting abstract submissions.

The event is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, research assistants, and early and mid-career postdoctoral researchers from academia and industry. Senior researchers, group leaders and lab heads are also welcome to attend and support their students and colleagues.

A sincere thank you to all our speakers who shared their research, expertise and practical insights at our recent World Hepatitis Day Special Seminar. The seminar highlighted the important work underway to improve hepatitis B and hepatitis C testing, treatment and care across Barwon South West.

We heard from A Professor Amanda Wade on modelling progress towards hepatitis C micro-elimination; Kate Mackie on community pharmacy-based testing and linkage to care; Dr Karen Blaney on strengthening hepatitis B care through a regional Community of Practice; Craig Harvey on harm reduction service use and emerging drug-related risks; Kirsty McColl on nurse-led point-of-care testing and community outreach; Dr Duncan Campbell on integrating hepatitis C care into mental health services; and Dr Christine Roder on the REACH-B study and improving models of care for people living with chronic hepatitis B.

Together, the presentations reinforced a key message: testing is only the beginning. People must also be supported to access treatment and remain connected to care.

Two Deakin–Burnet PhD scholarships are still available for domestic students commencing in 2027. The Deakin–Burnet Research Partnership supports collaborative research between Deakin University and the Burnet Institute, helping to strengthen existing partnerships and create new opportunities for collaboration.

Expressions of Interest are invited from Deakin–Burnet supervisory teams that already have an established collaboration, are interested in developing one, or require scholarship support for a domestic PhD student commencing in 2027. EOIs should be emailed to [email protected] which should include:
• A brief outline of the proposed project
• Details of the Deakin and Burnet-based supervisors
• The value of the collaboration
• Details of the proposed PhD candidate, if already identified

Candidates must meet Deakin’s eligibility requirements for PhD candidature and scholarship, including:
• A minimum 80% GPA (or H1 equivalent)
• Meeting English language requirements

The presentations will cover current research and approaches to hepatitis B and C care, including testing, treatment, harm reduction and the REACH-B Study across Barwon South West.

We are now just two weeks away from our World Hepatitis Day Seminar 2026.

This year’s Australian theme, ‘Take the Next Step’, is aimed at guiding conversations about the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done to improve hepatitis awareness, prevention, testing, treatment and care.

We are pleased to be joined by speakers from Deakin Research Deakin Institute for Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation, Barwon Health and Burnet Institute: A Prof Amanda Wade, Kate Mackie, Dr Karen Blaney, Craig Harvey, Kirsty McColl, Dr Duncan Campbell and Dr Christine Roder.

Our speakers will each bring their own experience and perspective to the discussion, and we are looking forward to hearing their insights on the next steps needed to strengthen the hepatitis response.

Every year on 27 June, we recognise World Microbiome Day, a day that celebrates the microbial communities that influence our health, environment and everyday lives.

At CIIDIR, we are proud to highlight the work of Dr Amelia McGuinness a researcher at the Deakin Food & Mood Centre. The GLOW Trial is exploring whether targeting the gut microbiome may be a safe and feasible potential treatment approach for people living with Long COVID. Long COVID can significantly affect people’s ability to work, study, connect with family and friends, and participate in everyday life. With limited evidence-based treatment options currently available, research like the GLOW Trial is helping build a better understanding of the role the gut microbiome may play in recovery, wellbeing and future care approaches.

This World Microbiome Day, we recognise the important work of researchers like Dr McGuinness, whose research is contributing to new conversations about microbiome science, immune health and long-term health outcomes.

This year, the Australian theme for World Hepatitis Day is "Take the Next Step" a reminder that every step matters, whether it's learning more about hepatitis, getting tested, accessing treatment, or supporting research that improves health outcomes.

While significant progress has been made, hepatitis continues to impact thousands of Australians. Advancing research and improving awareness remain important steps towards reducing this burden and improving health outcomes.

Join CIIDIR on Monday, 27 July 2026 at 11:00 am for a special seminar recognising World Hepatitis Day. The seminar will explore current hepatitis research and emerging developments in the field, highlighting how research, innovation, and collaboration continue to contribute to better prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care.
