From 1 October 2026, older Australians receiving in-home support will benefit from an important change under the Australian Government's Support at Home program, with personal care services set to be fully funded for eligible participants.
Announced as part of the Australian Government's broader aged care reforms, this change reflects a growing recognition of the vital role personal care plays in supporting older Australians to live safely, independently and with dignity in their own homes.
For many older people, personal care isn't simply about assistance with daily tasks. It's about maintaining dignity, confidence and independence while continuing to live safely at home.
Under the upcoming changes, approved personal care services will move into the fully funded clinical supports category. This means eligible participants with available funding in their Support at Home budget will no longer face out-of-pocket costs for services such as:
* Assistance with showering and personal hygiene
* Help with dressing and grooming
* Non-clinical continence support
* Other essential personal care activities
At Goldstar Care Solutions, we see firsthand the difference quality personal care makes in a person's daily life. These services often provide the foundation that enables older Australians to remain connected to their community, maintain their routines and continue living independently for longer.
Removing additional costs for personal care is a significant step towards making aged care more accessible and equitable. It reduces financial pressure on participants and their families while ensuring people can access the support they need without having to make difficult decisions based on affordability.
As Australia's aged care system continues to evolve, reforms that prioritise wellbeing, dignity and quality of life are essential. We welcome initiatives that help older Australians receive the support they need while remaining in the place they most want to be - their own home.
The changes will take effect from 1 October 2026 and apply to eligible services delivered from that date onwards.
For older Australians and families navigating the aged care system, understanding how these changes may impact individual care arrangements will be an important part of planning for the future.
At Goldstar Care Solutions, we're committed to helping our community stay informed and supported through every stage of their aged care journey. To find out more information on any of these changes or to speak to one of our team. Contact us at 03 5222 5399 or [email protected]
