AusAlert about to sound: The Australian Government will test its new national emergency warning system by sounding a siren-alert on every mobile phone that's on today at noon AWST. Going for 10 seconds, it'll also vibrate everyone's phones and send them a written test-warning.

If your phone is on, expect a warning saying CRITICAL AUSALERT even if you have no SIM card. If you've got an older phone or non-typical phone OS, the cell-broadcast technology alert will say something like Presidential Alert or Extreme Threat.

If you've experienced family and domestic violence or coercive control and you've got a safe phone you want stay hidden, make sure to turn it off ahead of the 10-second siren and phone-vibration alert that will sound out at noon AWST.

It doesn't matter if your phone is on silent or do-not-disturb mode. It will alarm and vibrate anyway with the written alert which is not actually a text message.

So turn off your safe-phone from 11am AWST if it sounding affects your safety. Apparently some people's phone will alert at a different time, so if you're really concerned, maybe keep it off for up to 24 hours.

How it works and why..

People in Western Australia already get alerts from the Western Australia Police Force in local areas for things like missing persons.

AusAlert works in a similar way, sending alerts in a particular local area. Once it's fully implemented, if you're not in the alert zone when an alert sounds, you will get it as soon as you enter the area with your handset.

Apparently the idea for the system was a legacy of the 2020 Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements. It's designed to eventually replace the SMS-based systems we already have in our community.

The aus-alerts may be used for natural disasters like bushfires, floods and cyclones, public safety and security threats like terrorist acts, health emergencies such as pandemics, and outbreaks or biosecurity threats.

The WA Government has expressed concerns the alerts won't reach landlines, with the federal government clarifying only phones connected to cell phone towers will get the alert, not sat-phones.

The alert sounds will of course be multi-lingual but the messages themselves will be in English.
