MATES - Making A Difference

MATES - Making A Difference Empowering friends & family to help in tough times through education, acceptance, connection & love. Some told me he had "saved their life".

To learn more about us & our goal we will provide you with a touch of backstory on why Mates - Making A Difference was created. The content below may contain triggering information, please proceed with caution. Mates - Making A Difference started it's journey in 2019 when I faced the hardest situation I have ever been in & possibly will ever be in, losing my youngest son...

When Morgan died in a

car accident many of his friends let me know how valuable his friendship was to them. Well go figure, with all those late-night phone calls & texts, his friends were saving him right back. Morgan struggled with mental ill-health requiring emergency services & a few hospital stays. After Morgan's passing my mum (Anna) wanted to do something tangible in Morgan's name & I had been racking my brain to think what I could do to make a difference when the lights went on & I realized these kids (young adults) were already doing it, by being his mate. As a tribute to Morgan the concept of Mates - Making A Difference was born. After many months of research & me talking a lot, I decided not to register Mates as a Charity. As far too much money is required for insurances etc., I would rather put our energy & our money into an existing non-profit organization such as Midwest Yellow Ribbon (Su***de Support & Prevention) &/ or other beneficial support services/ organizations.

* Funds raised outside of Geraldton will go to an organization to benefit the local area the funds were raised in (funds previously raised in Byford went to the Children's Help Line). Funds raised so far have put 4 people through a "Conversations for Life Course" run by Midwest Yellow Ribbon. Funds raised in Morgan's name will go towards education, support services & activities that promote the ongoing mental health support of anyone who may need it. We hope to encourage friends & family to come on board to help foster the community connections which are vital for our mental health & that of our children. We want to empower friends & family to help through education, acceptance, connection & love. "It takes a village..." Megan Jones

Learning to swim, healing her body, raising awareness and funds for for Life - Youth Support Services

“By lifting others, we lift ourselves.”

At 77, Keitha Bradley never imagined she’d be swimming kilometres in the ocean.

In fact, just a year earlier, she could barely walk.

When a knee replacement went wrong, Ms Bradley’s mobility declined to the point where she stopped walking and eventually gave up most daily activities, slipping into a deep mental low.

As doctors discussed further major surgeries, Ms Bradley decided to try something different.

“I thought, I better do something about it,” she said.

Ms Bradley started in the water, when walking was too painful.

She built her confidence up step-by-step, swimming in a pool before eventually venturing into the ocean.

“I couldn’t swim very much to begin with, but now I can do a kilometre in the ocean,” she said.

What began as rehab turned into something much bigger, as Ms Bradley found the ocean helped not just her body but also her mindset.

“It’s good for your body, it’s good for your mind, it’s good for your soul,” she said.

Now, Ms Bradley swims regularly, walks every day, and is back riding her bike; things that once felt out of reach.

After pushing herself to swim longer distances, she has signed up for a fundraising challenge to support youth su***de prevention.

“If I can just help one person at a time… that’s helped me to keep swimming,” she said.

For Ms Bradley, the journey is about more than fitness.

It’s about healing, belief, and showing others what’s possible.

“You just change your mindset… the body knows how to heal itself,” she said.

Her message is simple: start where you are, keep moving, and don’t write yourself off.

“You’re never too late to start.”

This is the first story in a new series, Humans of the Sea, exploring people and their connection to the ocean.

Today is World Mental Health Day.

Each year on October 10 we all have the chance to put mental health in the spotlight to raise awareness and break down stigma.

This year we have focussed on the meaningful connections in our lives, and why they are so important for good mental health.

Mental health is an issue that touches each and every one of us in different ways, and World Mental Health Day reminds us that we should be connecting with loved ones, connecting with our community and colleagues, connecting with services and supports if needed - and most importantly - connecting back with ourselves for good mental health.
