We caught up with Eleanor, a dietetics student who recently completed her WA Centre for Rural Health of The University of Western Australia rural placement with us in Mount Magnetโ€”and she had plenty to share about her experience!

Highlight of her placement?
โ€œWorking with a lovely group of students in Mount Magnet and getting to know the friendly and welcoming community in Mount Magnet.โ€

Most impactful moment?
โ€œThe most impactful moment was the cultural tour we had with a knowledgeable Aboriginal community member Cecilia Kelly, learning about the importance of their connection to Country and land.โ€

Biggest surprise?
โ€œThe commitment the community has to providing the students and younger people in Mount Magnet with experiences and activities throughout the week.โ€

Her advice to future students:
โ€œTake on all the learning experiences you can, say YES! And connect with the community as much as possible, even if just through a chat on the street or a morning tea.โ€

Weekend must-dos:
โ€œSunsets and stargazing at the granites, visiting the museum, and exploring the surrounding towns.โ€

There is something special about seeing former students return as colleagues and leaders.

We were delighted to welcome Jade Lewington from Link Assistive by Tobii Dynavox back to the WA Centre for Rural Health of The University of Western Australia, delivering workshops and consultations in Geraldton focused on assistive technology and communication supports for community members and allied health professionals.

Jade was one of the first speech pathology students to complete a semester-long final-year placement in 2015. More than a decade on, sheโ€™s returned as an experienced clinicianโ€”sharing her expertise with those who once taught her.

As WACRH Senior Lecturer and speech pathologist Kathryn Fitzgerald reflects:
โ€œOne of the great privileges of working in rural health education is seeing students grow into skilled professionals and leaders. Itโ€™s inspiring to stay connected with our alumni who become our colleagues, collaborators and friends, continuing to make a difference in rural and remote communities.โ€

As National Reconciliation Week comes to an end, we will continue to learn about the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Mabo Day, celebrated annually on 3 June, commemorates Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful advocacy to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius, or โ€˜land belonging to no-oneโ€™.

The 2026 theme, All In, invites us to reflect on the past, consider the present, and think about the role we can play in building respectful relationships in the future.

Last weekโ€™s inaugural Geraldton Regional Careers Expo attracted over 1000 high school students and community members from across the Midwest and we were there to showcase health careers.

WA Centre for Rural Health rural placement health students engaged in conversations with the students about the range of health professions and promoted the upcoming Year 10 Student Health Academy that we run at WACRH over two days in August this year.

Big thank you to UWA Nursing and UWA social work who came up from Perth to support the Education WA event.
