In my very sleep-deprived state, I managed to spell animals as amimals and cut off part of another text box so that the “y" looked like a “v”.

Not ideal, but also not the end of the world. At least Baby Heera, my little assistant for the day, approves of the boards!

I’ll fix the boards, learn from it, add an extra proofread next time, and have a little laugh at myself in the meantime.

Because communication doesn’t need to be perfect to be valuable—and apparently neither do my communication boards 😅

12 years ago, I came to Geraldton for my rural speech pathology placement.

At the time, I don’t think I fully realised just how much that 18 week placement would shape my life, my career, and my passion for regional practice.

Because if it wasn’t for that placement, I probably wouldn’t be working in this community today. I wouldn’t have built a business here. I wouldn’t have made a family here. And I wouldn’t have seen, so clearly, just how important accessible health services and communication supports are for regional families.

Rural and regional placements give students such a valuable insight into how services work outside metro areas — the challenges, the creativity, the relationships, the gaps, and the absolute privilege of being part of a community.

Going back through these old photos from WACRH felt very special. A little reminder of where it all started, and how much that one placement changed the direction of my life.

So, if you’re a speech pathology student wondering whether a rural placement is worth it — I highly recommend it.

Even if you don’t stay forever, it might just give you a whole new perspective, and friendships to last a lifetime!!

And you never know… it might change everything.

It’s National Reconciliation Week, and this year’s theme is All In.

Living and working on beautiful Yamatji Country is something I feel deeply grateful for.

This week, I’m reflecting on how we listen, learn, build trust, and create spaces where children and families feel safe, respected and heard.

Thank you to and for the learning I’ve completed this year around identity, Social and Emotional Wellbeing, and culturally responsive practice.

We’re continuing to listen, learn and take meaningful action.
