Thousands of feet were pounding the pavement around Gladstone on Sunday for the annual Port to Park Fun Run, and what a great morning it was for our community.

We snapped this photo at the start with Curtis the Turtle, but being The Hearing Centre, we couldn’t help noticing something…

No matter what we asked Curtis, we couldn’t get a response.

For a moment we thought his hearing might need checking. Turns out his hearing is probably just fine. He’s a turtle. He doesn’t talk. 😂

We’ll stick to looking after the hearing of Gladstone locals and leave Curtis to doing what he does best!

Congratulations to everyone who took part in another fantastic Port to Park.

We put Alan through AI.

The computer analysed decades of hearing experience, thousands of hearing tests and countless conversations with Gladstone locals.

Its conclusion?

"This bloke has heard it all."

Except, apparently, when his wife is talking from another room. 😄

Hearing loss doesn't always happen overnight.

For many people, it starts with asking others to repeat themselves, turning the television up a little louder or finding conversations harder to follow in busy environments. Over time, those small frustrations can begin to affect confidence, relationships and everyday enjoyment.

At The Hearing Centre Gladstone, we help people understand what they're hearing, what they might be missing and what options are available to improve their hearing experience. With today's technology offering clearer sound and more personalised solutions than ever before, there are more choices available than many people realise.

If you've noticed changes in your hearing, or someone close to you has mentioned it, a hearing assessment could be the first step towards reconnecting with the sounds that matter most.

We have a question for the Gladstone community...

Back in April, Alan supposably entered the Gladstone Harbour Festival Raft Race aboard what can only be described as the world's largest hearing aid accessory... a giant ear!

Which got us thinking...

Should we install this on the roof of The Hearing Centre at 2/34 Tank Street? Surely with an ear this size we'd be able to hear every conversation in Gladstone, every fishing story at the marina and every "I think my hearing is fine" from people who definitely need a hearing test.

In all seriousness, hearing well isn't about having bigger ears. It's about making sure your hearing is working as it should.

So, what do you think? Should Alan bring the giant ear out of retirement and put it on display at Tank Street?

A message from Alan - owner of The Hearing Centre.

One of the very first things my father taught me when I started in audiology has stayed with me for my entire career.

One day, after seeing a particularly difficult client, I said, "Boy, that client was a cranky old man."

Dad pulled me aside and, quite sternly, said, "Don't ever say that again."

He then said something I've never forgotten.

"When you get to that age, you spend more time going to funerals than you do going to dinners.

Your friends and family are disappearing. Your mind may still feel young, but your body isn't. You can't do the things you used to do, even though you still want to.

Many people are living alone. So, before you judge someone, try to understand what their life might be like."

Those words changed the way I looked at people.

Whenever I have a bad day, I remind myself of that conversation.

My clients don't deserve to carry the weight of whatever is happening in my own life. They deserve patience, kindness, and my full attention.

Sadly, that lesson was put to the test last Monday.

Our beloved family dog had come to work with us because we had made the heartbreaking decision to take him to the vet that morning to say goodbye.

Like anyone who has loved a pet, our hearts were breaking.

My first appointment of the day was a hearing test for a young girl.

I'll admit, I wondered how I was going to get through it.

Thankfully, she was a beautiful, polite little girl with an equally lovely mum.

The appointment went perfectly, and I had the privilege of telling them her hearing was perfect.

For those few minutes, they unknowingly gave me something I needed, a reason to smile during one of the hardest mornings I've had in a long time.

Some people may think, "It's only a pet."

Others know that losing a pet means losing a family member, a loyal companion who loved you unconditionally every single day.

The grief is overwhelming, and the silence they leave behind is real.

We miss him terribly, and we're still struggling with the loss.

But last Monday reminded me of something else.

Every person who walks through our door is carrying a story we know nothing about.

Some are grieving. Some are frightened. Some are lonely. Some are simply trying to get through the day.

As health professionals and as human beings, we never know what burden someone is carrying.

A little kindness, a little patience, and a willingness to listen can mean far more than we will ever know.

One thing that makes Gladstone... Gladstone... is the sound of industry.

Day and night, there's a familiar background soundtrack across our city. Ships coming into port. Trains on the move. Heavy industry at work. It's the hum that reminds us our region never really stops.

So, here's a question...can you hear it?

If you live on the outskirts of town, perhaps you're simply too far away. But if you've lived in Gladstone for years and that familiar hum seems to have disappeared, it might not be the industry that's changed.

Hearing loss often happens gradually, making it easy to miss the early signs. You might notice people mumbling more often, turning the TV up a little louder or asking others to repeat themselves.

A hearing assessment is quick, painless and could make a real difference to your quality of life.

If it's been a while since you've had your hearing checked, the team at The Hearing Centre Gladstone is here to help. Sometimes, the sounds you've been missing are closer than you think. 👂

Did you know your ears never switch off? 👂💤

Even while you're asleep, your ears continue to hear what's happening around you.

So why don't you wake up every time the wind blows or the fridge hums?

Because your brain is constantly filtering sounds, allowing you to rest while still staying alert to the noises that matter most, like your name being called, a smoke alarm or a baby crying.

Our hearing is an incredible partnership between our ears and our brain, working together around the clock.

Now that's something worth sleeping on. 😴
