Protecting bull fertility starts well before joining.

A bull might look fit, sound and ready to work but what happens in the weeks leading up to joining can have a significant impact on his fertility.

Drawing on more than 40 years working in bovine reproduction, Ced recently spoke with The Land about of the factors producers should consider when managing their bulls for joining.

Stress is one of the biggest.

Yard handling, vaccination, transport, nutrition and heat can all place additional stress on bulls. As Ced explains, increased cortisol associated with stress can lower testosterone, while a significant insult to the testicles can affect s***m production for more than two months.

Even routine management needs to be considered. Timing vaccinations and other procedures to give bulls adequate time to recover before joining can make a difference.

Heat is another major consideration. S***m production relies on the testicles remaining cooler than core body temperature, meaning extreme temperatures, limited shade and radiant heat from bare ground can all put fertility at risk.

For producers, the message is simple: protect the investment you’ve made in your bulls.

✔️ Minimise unnecessary stress
✔️ Plan vaccinations and handling well ahead of joining
✔️ Manage transport carefully
✔️ Maintain adequate nutrition
✔️ Provide access to shade and ground cover
✔️ Allow bulls adequate recovery time before joining

Every bull has a job to do, and good management before joining gives him the best opportunity to do it.

Anyone who sells bulls understands the stress of semen testing day! 🤣
In 30-odd years of testing bulls, we have only ever had one bull fail, but that doesn’t stop the pressure when it comes to our RBWS bulls!
Having a vet who knows how to get the job done calmly, quickly and correctly means a lot when you’re dealing with your livelihood. But just as importantly, how the job is done matters. When the experience is stressful for the bulls, getting them back up the race and handling them again can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.
We washed ours today and worked them back up the race, and full credit to Nancy — they never had a problem at all. Not even a drama. 👌🏼
That says a lot about the way she handles cattle.
So, thank you Nancy for your calm, confident and stress-free approach. We really appreciate it, and you are now rated amongst the best with Ced Wise and Adam Wise ❤️

The hammer might secure the bull, but it doesn’t secure the genetics forever.

Ced joins AETA Talks

Ced recently joined the American Embryo Transfer Association’s AETA Talks podcast alongside Stuart Geard from Holbrook Breeders Australia and Rory Nevard from the University of Sydney for a special episode focused on bovine reproduction in Australia.

The conversation explores the evolution of in vitro production (IVP) across Australasia, along with some of the practical realities of delivering reproductive technologies across the Australian beef industry. From breed and environmental variability to distance, logistics and working with producers across very different production systems.

It’s a great discussion bringing together perspectives from northern and southern Australia, as well as industry and academia.

Success across the cattle lawns at EKKA 2026

With another Ekka wrapped up, we took a look back at the results from the Beef Cattle rings, and the numbers caught our attention.

This year’s Ekka saw 42 Grand Champions crowned across 21 breeds, representing the best of the male and female exhibits.

Of those:

🏆 24 of the 42 Grand Champions came from breeding programs that are Wise Repro customers.
🐂 15 of the 21 breeds had at least one Grand Champion exhibited by a Wise Repro customer.

For our team, these results reflect the breadth of breeding programs we’re fortunate to work alongside across Australia.

From semen collection and assessment through to morphology, AI, embryo transfer and broader reproductive programs, we’re proud to support producers investing in the genetics and reproductive performance of their herds.

Congratulations to all exhibitors, breeders and connections on another outstanding Ekka, and particularly to our customers on their success in the ring.

Competency. Consistency. Capacity.

As Wise Repro continues to grow, so does our investment in the technical capability of our team.

Recently, three members of the Wise Repro team achieved accreditation as members of the University of Queensland S***m Morphology Standardisation Program (UQSMP) with exceptional results. Congratulations Masoud, Monique and Raza.

We also had Masoud of Rocky Repro and Shehrbano of Ced Wise AB Services attend the two-day Livestock Semen Assessment Course at the University of Sydney, led by Professor Simon de Graaf.

But competency is only part of the equation. Consistency matters too.

Across Wise Repro, we internally benchmark our team members performing motility and morphology, with the expectation that assessments remain within 5% of one another. It’s an important part of maintaining consistency across our team, regardless of where testing is carried out. This plays a major role in our quality assurance program, helping ensure we consistently deliver high-quality products and services to our customers across both domestic and international markets.

As we continue to expand our capacity, maintaining a high standard of technical competency and consistency remains a priority.
