Have you heard? PCOS has a new name, and it actually makes a lot more sense. For years, many people with PCOS were told their ovaries "looked fine" on ultrasound, and wondered if they'd been diagnosed correctly.
The truth is, the old name was never quite right. PCOS is really a hormonal and metabolic condition involving things like insulin resistance and androgen excess, not just an ovarian issue.
That's why it's now being called PMOS: Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
The name change is backed by the RACGP and a major international guideline review that included 3,000+ voices of people with lived experience. It's a step toward clearer diagnoses and better metabolic and mental health support.
So, while the treatment hasn't changed, hopefully the conversations will.
