SA Health advises that all health professionals and their clients need to wear a single use surgical mask 😷 effective as of 1/12/20. Unfortunately cotton masks are not sufficient in health care settings. There will be some leniency until people can source these. Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe.

21/11/2020

Physio and Pilates will reopen on Monday. Previous restrictions apply:
Social distancing
Strict Hand Hygiene
Wiping equipment immediately after use
BYO towel and drink bottle
Mask wearing is recommended

Some good info about bone health

[DON’T FORGET THE BIOLOGICAL FACTORS] 👀
_
👉🏻Many people (athletes+ practitioners) will focus only on the BIOMECHANICAL factors (load applied to bones) that can lead to a bone stress injury (see list on left)-ie what training loads were being done prior to injury onset 🧐
_
👉🏻A common mistake however is failure to consider/investigate the BIOLOGICAL factors (ability of bone to resist load and deal with cumulative loading) that can contribute to bone stress injury onset 🦴
_
👉🏻 These biological factors can include:
▶️ Athletic background: participation in multi directional bone loading sports (eg basketball) as an adolescent can positively influence bone geometry & density. While sports such as swimming+ cycling through formative years may have the opposite effect 🏀
▶️Medical history: has there been a family history of known low bone density (osteopenia, osteoporosis)? Are there any underlying medical conditions or systemic illnesses that may result in malabsorption of calcium (eg coeliac disease, thyroid/ parathyroid disorders, IBD, ongoing use of glucocorticoid medications). Has there been a history of prior bone stress injury? 🔍
▶️Is the athlete in a state of energy balance or Low Energy Availability (LEA)? If there is a state of LEA or RED-S the athlete’s bone health may be compromised 🌮
▶️Bone Health. There are times when ascertaining an athlete’s bone mineral density (BMD) is key (w DEXA testing) . For athletes with a history of BSI BMD assessment is key🦴
▶️ Calcium & Vit D status: the requirement through diet for calcium is large for endurance athletes. Vit D is required to aid the absorption of calcium-interestingly many athletes can be Vit D deficient (training in the dark, indoors etc) 🥛
▶️ Life Stress: hard to quantify however sleep patterns, life stressors (relational, financial, study etc) do exert physiological affects on the body and must be considered 😬
_
📌TAKE HOME: Avoid making the common mistake of not considering the biological factors that influence bone health when rehabilitating, assessing, working with an athlete with a bone stress injury. A thorough approach does not simply focus on the training loads ✅
