We often get asked how old a child needs to be before an eye test can be done. The truth is, it can be done from birth. If you have any concerns, if baby's eyes are turning or there is a family history of congenital eye diseases, our optometrists are ready, willing and able to see your little one.
If you are not particularly concerned, testing can wait a year or so, but regular checks are recommended for children just as much as for adults. Some vision issues are picked up when a child goes to school, but since 80% of learning comes through the eyes, give them a headstart and have their eyes tested before they start school. The examination cost is bulk billed to Medicare, so there are no out-of-pocket costs to you.

The human eye is one of the most complex organs in the body. Working together with the brain, it can rapidly adjust to changing light, detect motion, distinguish millions of colors, and process an enormous amount of visual information every second.

Light enters through the cornea and pupil before being focused by the lens. It then passes through the vitreous humor and reaches the retina, where specialized cells convert light into electrical signals. Those signals travel through the optic nerve to the brain, which transforms them into the images you see every day.

Despite centuries of advances in photography and imaging technology, the human visual system remains an extraordinary example of biological engineering.

The human eye sees at 576 mega-pixels. The best camera currently available takes photos of 400 mega-pixels. The most expensive camera out there does not perform as well as the human eye, so taking care of your eyes should be highest on your To Do list. Have regular eye check-ups, limit the amount of time you spend on phones, computers and other screens, and eat a good diet to help keep your eyes healthy for as long as possible.

We have three optometrists ready and willing to carry out an eye test on any and every child. Ring us on 62729407 or book online at https://glenorchyeyecare.com.au/

Ever wondered how optometrists spot eye diseases early? Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, helps do this with advanced light technology. It looks at your retina and optic nerve closely without touching you.

We use OCT scan technology to provide detailed, non-invasive imaging of the retina, helping detect vision-threatening eye diseases early and accurately.

Key Takeaways
Optical Coherence Tomography uses light waves for high-resolution eye imaging.
The procedure is entirely non-invasive, painless, and requires no physical contact.
It allows specialists to view the retina and optic nerve in 3D detail.
Early detection of eye diseases is significantly improved through this technology.
Patients benefit from quick, accurate diagnostic results during their visit.

Do you struggle with the weight of frames on your nose? The ultimate in light weight frames are these rimless frames that are made with titanium metal. They are so light you might even forget they are there. The lenses are held in place by plugs at the bridge and the outer edge.
One of the great things about these frames is that you pick the sides and bridge you want, collectively known as the chassis, and then you can choose any lens shape you want. Looking at the pictures, if you like the chassis in picture number 3, but prefer the lens shape in picture number 6, that is very easily sorted. We just tell the lab what our patient wants and they accommodate us perfectly.
Another little snippet of information on these frames: NASA use a type of this frame for all their astronauts because they are screw free. The lack of screws is an important factor as there would be no risk of any components of the frames becoming loose and potentially damaging equipment or contributing to injuries.
