I’ve helped so many clients with anxiety around driving, especially on highways.
But until a couple of weeks ago, I’d never actually experienced it myself.
I’ve NEVER been scared of driving. In fact, I’m pretty sure in another life I was a stunt driver 😂
Then recently I had to take our youngest to Spotlight.
While driving, this horrible feeling came over me…
I felt like I was going to lose control of the car.
And that scared the absolute s**t out of me.
Not just because of me — but because I had someone I love sitting beside me and other cars all around us.
Then it started happening again.
Any time I drove further than the next town, I could feel that anxiety creeping in.
So I did everything I’d normally tell a client to do.
I breathed.
I grounded myself.
I talked myself through it…
“You’re doing great. You’re safe. Not much further. Keep going.”
But today I tried something different.
My beautiful husband suggested I grab a coffee because having a coffee in the car is something I’ve always enjoyed and associated with relaxing.
I actually thought the caffeine might make things worse… but I gave it a go.
So off I went to pick up my latest Marketplace purchase 😂
Coffee beside me.
Favourite music blasting.
And when I felt that anxious feeling starting…
I took a sip of my coffee and sang Pink Pony Club as loudly as I bloody could. 😂🎶
AND I DID IT.
Was the coffee some magical cure for anxiety? No.
Will this work for everybody? Absolutely not.
But for me, in that moment, I found something familiar that helped me feel like ME again instead of focusing on the fear.
And now I have one successful drive behind me.
Which means the next one might feel just that little bit easier. ❤️
Sometimes overcoming something isn’t about making the fear disappear completely.
Sometimes it’s showing yourself that you can feel the fear… and still keep moving forward.
And if you’re struggling with driving anxiety too, please know you’re definitely not the only one. ❤️
Tell me — have you ever suddenly developed a fear or anxiety around something you used to do without even thinking about it?
