Do we have incredibly advanced ultrasound technology? Yes. But that’s not what “tertiary” means.

“Tertiary” doesn’t describe a type of ultrasound or a machine. It describes the level of healthcare and specialist expertise available to you.

Think of it like this:

Primary care → your first point of healthcare, such as your GP.

Secondary care → specialist care, such as an obstetrician or specialist maternity service.

Tertiary care → highly specialised care, with advanced expertise for complex assessment and diagnosis.

So what does tertiary ultrasound mean at Haven?

It means access to a highly specialised level of ultrasound expertise and diagnostic imaging, with expert sonographers, maternal fetal medicine specialists, obstetricians and gynaecologists on site and in real time.

And you don’t need a complicated pregnancy, or even to be pregnant to benefit from tertiary ultrasound expertise.

Whether you are coming to Haven for an exciting early pregnancy scan, routine pregnancy imaging or specialist gynaecological ultrasound, you have the depth of expertise around your care from the beginning.

And if something unexpected appears, something needs a closer look or another specialist opinion is needed, you’re already exactly in the right place.

Officially, Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a screening test. It uses a blood sample taken during pregnancy to screen for the chance of certain chromosomal conditions.

Unofficially? We can find out whether you are having a boy or a girl 😃 or even both 💙💓

There can also be another very human reason for having it. You want information. You want reassurance. You want to understand as much as you can about your pregnancy.

We strongly believe the care surrounding the test, and the way your results are prioritised, delivered and explained matters too.

At Haven, NIPT is available from 10 weeks with a referral from your GP, obstetrician or maternity care provider.

We do things differently. Before your blood test, we perform a pre-NIPT ultrasound, check your gestation and determine the number of babies - very important information before proceeding with screening.

Then there’s the practical part: your NIPT blood collection is available onsite at Haven. No leaving your appointment with another place to find and another stop to make.

And perhaps most importantly, you’re somewhere you can ask questions and be supported by a team that lives and breathes pregnancy, maternal fetal medicine, ultrasound and genetics every day.

NIPT may begin with a blood test but we don’t think your experience of it should end there.

Two lines. And suddenly, there’s a lot of waiting, and a lot you want to know. 🤍

An early dating scan can help confirm the location of a pregnancy, estimate gestational age and your due date, determine whether there is one baby or more and, depending on how early you are, identify cardiac activity.

But the reasons women choose to have one are often much more personal. Peace of mind and reassurance.

Maybe your dates are uncertain. Maybe you’ve had some pain or bleeding. Maybe you’ve experienced pregnancy loss before and this time, waiting feels very different.

Or maybe nothing is wrong at all. You’re excited. You’re nervous. You’ve seen those two lines and the weeks until your next scan suddenly feel like a VERY LONG time.

Dating scans are commonly performed from around 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy.

An early scan at Haven is about explaining what we can see, what we can’t yet see, what it means and what happens next.

There is space for excitement here.
There is space for nerves.
There is space for hope after loss.

Let’s talk ‘toe rays’ 👣🌞 (how cute is that term?!) When we look at baby’s feet on ultrasound, there’s a clinical reason for it…

During a morphology scan, the legs and feet form part of the systematic examination of your baby’s anatomy.

Your sonographer assesses the limbs, including their presence, position, alignment and movement, as part of checking development and looking for structural differences.

They ARE ALSO ridiculously cute. 😍

And those tiny feet have been surprisingly busy:

🦶🏼 The lower limbs start developing very early in pregnancy, with the beginnings of the feet appearing just weeks after conception.

🦶🏼 ‘Digital rays,’ the early beginnings of those ten tiny toes, appear at around 9 weeks of pregnancy, and by around 10 weeks the toes are becoming distinct and separating.

🦶🏼 Fetal limb movements can be detected on ultrasound from around 9 weeks, becoming increasingly varied and refined as the first trimester progresses.

🦶🏼 By the 11–14 week scan, the upper leg, lower leg and foot can be visualised and assessed.

Just one of the extraordinary pieces of ultrasound technology we use at Haven; and what she allows our specialists and sonographers to see is remarkable.

❤️ Blood flow through your baby’s heart and vessels.

Not simply whether a heart is beating. Doppler ultrasound can help us assess blood-flow patterns and direction through the developing heart and circulation.

🧠 Structures within your baby’s developing brain.

Long before you’ve held your baby for the first time, we can examine remarkably detailed fetal anatomy inside that tiny head.

🦴 The developing spine and skeleton.

And 3D ultrasound isn’t just for those beautiful little faces. Volume imaging can allow us to examine anatomy from different perspectives.

🩸 Even low-velocity blood flow in very small vessels.

Advanced Doppler technology can reveal incredibly fine vascular detail.

❤️ A tiny fetal heart from multiple views.
Its chambers. Its connections. Its blood flow. All while that little heart is beating away inside you.

And yes…

👶🏼 We also get to see the good stuff.

A pout.
A yawn.

But perhaps the most important thing this machine can do?

Give an experienced set of human eyes more information to work with.

YES, those wispy little spikes you can see on this ultrasound are baby’s hair! And occasionally, we see quite the hairdo at Haven 😎😍

By the time those tiny locks become visible on ultrasound, baby’s hair story has already been months in the making…

🎀 First trimester: hair follicle development begins
🎀 Second trimester: hair development continues
🎀 From around 24 weeks: scalp hair can sometimes be seen on ultrasound
🎀 Later pregnancy: it becomes increasingly likely to be visible

So what does seeing lots of hair mean?

Mostly, that we’ve been lucky enough to get a gorgeous glimpse of it!

While it’s tempting to start predicting baby’s first hairstyle, ultrasound isn’t used to predict how much hair your baby will have at birth.

Likewise, being born with lots or very little hair doesn’t tell us what your child’s hair will ultimately be like. Hair continues to cycle and change after birth.

Of course, we’re not performing your medical ultrasound to check out baby’s ’do. 😉

We’re concentrating on the all the very important things — baby’s anatomy, growth and wellbeing.

But those wispy little locks? 🥹 We find them ridiculously cute. 🤍

These are not silly questions. They’re frightened questions…

❤️‍🩹 My baby is measuring behind. Should I be worried?
❤️‍🩹 They couldn’t get all the pictures. Does that mean something is wrong?
❤️‍🩹 Why have I been asked to come back?
❤️‍🩹 Is my baby’s heartbeat normal?
❤️‍🩹 What does this percentile mean?
❤️‍🩹 Why did another sonographer come into the room?
❤️‍🩹 Do sonographers go quiet when something’s wrong?
❤️‍🩹 My report says ______. What does that mean?

Spend enough time looking at what pregnant women are searching and asking online, and you begin to see a pattern.

Women trying to interpret measurements they don’t understand. Analysing what was said, and what wasn’t.

Wondering whether a facial expression or a moment of silence meant something more.

Comparing their baby’s measurements with strangers’ babies online.

Trying to work out whether being asked to return means something is wrong.

And sometimes doing all of this after they’ve just had an ultrasound.

This upsets us, and it’s exactly why we built Haven differently!

Obstetric ultrasound isn’t only about obtaining images and measurements. It’s also about making sure you understand what is happening.

You should feel comfortable asking questions; understand what is being examined and why; and have unfamiliar measurements and terminology explained to you.

If another look or follow-up scan is needed, you should understand why.

If something unexpected is found, you deserve clear, compassionate communication about what is known, what isn’t yet known, and what happens next.

Good communication doesn’t mean promising certainty when there isn’t any. It means making sure you understand where things stand in that moment.

We never want Google or a pregnancy forum to be the place you have to go to decipher what just happened in our ultrasound room.
