There IS a difference between a good support worker and a great one 💜

I have been fortunate enough to see both in action with my own children.

A good support worker shows up on time, does what is needed and leaves.

A great support worker does the same but there is something different. You can feel and see it. The way they show up, the way they talk, act and interact with you and your Individual that goes beyond what is the “norm” 😊

They KNOW your loved one.....

⭐️ They know that Monday mornings are harder than Tuesdays.
⭐️ Which music helps soothe and which sounds make things worse.
⭐️ They know when to encourage and push gently and when to simply sit alongside and just ‘be there’ in the moment.
⭐️ Which key words encourage and resonate with your loved one creating an internal calming shift, and they know the words that dont work that lead to a possible trigger/downward spiral.
⭐️ They know when to ask a question or two and when to stay silent.
⭐️,What foods, textures and colours to include and what to avoid
⭐️ They remember what happened last week and they follow up on it this week.

A great support worker does not just provide support....they become part of your village. 💜

And when that great support worker is also connected to the rest of your team through one app, with access to all the right information before they even walk through the door....

That is when your individual gets the very best version of the support they deserve 🤗 Everyone on the same page, working towards the same goals, milestones, understanding and care ✨️

Have you ever woken up at 3am with a thought that would not go away? And no matter how hard you tried you could not go back to sleep 😫

For so many NDIS families and parents that 3am thought sounds something like this….

“Am I doing enough for my loved one?”

And then the thoughts and the list start building…..

● Are all the therapy goals being met? I am not really sure if they are.
● Will the funding go through or will I have to reassess everything all over again?
● I have to remember to send the goals to the new therapist.
● I forgot to make that appointment again….I should have booked that weeks ago.
● Am I communicating everything to everyone? Am I even making sense?
● How will we cope during the time our support worker is going on holidays?
● I wonder if the report I sent is still sitting in someone’s inbox somewhere waiting to be read.

At 3am it all feels SO enormous and completely overwhelming.

For me my thoughts always seem to have the snowball effect….you know how a snowball starts out small at the top of the hill, but by the bottom it ends up humongous?

Yep. My thoughts seem to tumble into the next one, and then I get super overwhelmed at how huge my To Do List is and how hard it is to keep track of.

Here is what I want you to know….

The fact that you are lying awake thinking about these things is proof of how deeply you love and care for your loved ones. 💜

But we should not be carrying all of this in our heads alone.

That is what Unique StarShine was built for.

To take the list out of our heads and put it somewhere organised, connected and manageable.

So that the next time 3am comes….the list is already taken care of and ready to tackle when we are. 💜

I want to talk about the day I realised I could not do this alone. 💜

It was not a dramatic moment.
It was actually a very normal every day type of moment for our family.

I was sitting on a park bench, watching my children playing while taking some deep relaxing breaths....and I realised how absolutely tired and weary I was.

Normally I would be up playing with them, laughing, giggling, helping them make their next progressive steps forward....

But I felt like I was stuck to that bench.

Weighted down in my body. My head feeling foggy. My heart feeling heavy.

I just....sat there.

I did not cry. I did not fall apart.

I just sat very still and battled through my thoughts and feelings.

“I am so tired.” 💤

Not the kind of tired that sleep fixes.

The kind of tired that comes from carrying too much for too long without enough support around me. 😫

It was in that moment I understood something I had been refusing to see for a long time.

I was not built to do this alone.

None of us are.

We are built for community. For connection 🤗. For a village of people working together toward the same goal. 🌟

And that is exactly what Unique StarShine was born from....that quiet moment sitting on a park bench.

That realisation that something had to change. 🙏

This was not the only moment that led me to build Unique StarShine. There were a few. But this one stays with me because it was so ordinary. So everyday. And yet it changed everything.

Thank you for fighting for me even when the system made it feel impossible.
Thank you for seeing me on the days when nobody else did.
Thank you for never giving up.

They may not always be able to say these words.

But I promise you....they feel them.

Every single day.

You are their Individual. And there is nobody else in the world who does what you do for them.

You are not only their Individual.....you are their advocate, supporter, defender and a champion for their every need ⭐️

Some weeks it is simply showing up again when you were not sure you had it in you.

To the parent who just received a diagnosis for their child....💜

I know where you are right now.

And I know it feels like the ground has shifted beneath you.

I want to tell you some things that I wish someone had told me in those early days.

Your child is still the same person they were before that appointment. The diagnosis does not change who they are. It opens a door to understanding them better.

You do not need to have it all figured out right now. Not today. Not this week. Take it one step at a time and give yourself permission to not know everything yet.

There is a community waiting for you. People who have walked this path before you and who genuinely want to help you find your feet. You are going to meet some of the most extraordinary humans you have ever known.

It is going to be hard. There is no point pretending otherwise. But it is also going to be filled with moments of joy and love and pride that you cannot even imagine from where you are standing right now.

And you are not going to do any of it alone. 💜

There is one thing I always make sure happens before any appointment. 💜

I send a message to everyone involved.

The Support Worker who is coming that morning.
The Therapist who needs to know what kind of week we have had.
The Specialist who asked for an update last visit.

Not a long message. Just a quick update.

“She had a rough night. She is a little anxious today. She did something incredible at therapy on Tuesday that you should know about.”

That one message changes the entire appointment.

Because when the people around your Individual walk in ALREADY knowing what kind of week it has been, they do not spend the first fifteen minutes catching up.

They spend the whole time actually helping.

That is the difference a connected support network makes. 💜

Not just information shared. But the RIGHT information, to the RIGHT people, at the RIGHT time.

Can we talk about waiting rooms for a moment? 💜

Not the ones at the doctor’s office. Not the ones at the therapy clinic.

The invisible waiting room that NDIS families live in every single day.

Waiting for the plan to be approved.
Waiting for the report to come back.
Waiting for the support worker to be found.
Waiting for the provider to call you back.
Waiting for the system to catch up with what your Individual actually needs.

It is exhausting in a way that is very hard to explain to someone who has never sat in that waiting room.

Because while you are waiting....life keeps going.

Your Individual keeps growing. Their needs keep changing. The window of opportunity does not pause just because the paperwork is slow.
