Rushing to the toilet all the time?

Going to the toilet ‘just in case’, constantly mapping out bathrooms or urgency when you hear running water might be more than a habit.

Bladder urgency and frequency can sometimes be linked to pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder habits, breathing patterns, stress or pressure management strategies.

You shouldn’t feel anxious every time you’re away from a bathroom.

The good news? These symptoms are often very treatable with physiotherapy.

What does the pelvic floor actually do?

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that sits at the base of the pelvis like a hammock, supporting the bladder, bowel and uterus.

These muscles help with:

🔹Bladder and bowel control
🔹Supporting pelvic organs
🔹Core stability
🔹Sexual function
🔹Managing pressure during exercise and lifting

When the pelvic floor isn’t functioning well, symptoms can show up in lots of different ways, and not always as weakness.

Sometimes the muscles are underactive. Sometimes they’re overactive and tight. Sometimes it’s a coordination issue. That’s why assessment matters.

Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s normal.

Leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise is incredibly common after pregnancy, birth and with age. But it’s not something you simply have to ‘put up with’.

Pelvic floor symptoms are often dismissed as ‘just part of being a woman’ or ‘normal after kids’, but many of these symptoms can improve significantly with the right treatment and support.

If you’ve noticed:

🔹Badder leakage
🔹Faecal incontinence
🔹Heaviness or dragging sensations
🔹Urgency to get to the toilet
🔹Pain with exercise or intimacy
🔹Difficulty returning to running or gym
🔹Difficulty holding wind

When to seek help for dizziness or vertigo

Occasional, short-lived dizziness can happen for a range of reasons, but ongoing or recurrent symptoms are worth investigating, especially when they start to affect your confidence with movement or daily activities.

You may benefit from a physiotherapy assessment if:

🔷 Your symptoms have been ongoing for more than a few days.
🔷 You’ve experienced repeated episodes of vertigo over the past few months.
🔷 You feel unsteady, off-balance, or at risk of falling.
🔷 Dizziness is impacting your ability to work, drive, exercise or complete daily tasks.

In many cases, dizziness is related to treatable issues within the balance system, and a structured assessment can help identify the cause and guide appropriate management.

However, if symptoms are sudden, severe or occur alongside neurological signs such as sudden weakness in the face, arm or leg, double vision, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, you should seek urgent medical attention immediately.

How can physiotherapy help with dizziness and vertigo?

Physiotherapy plays an important role in identifying the underlying cause of dizziness and guiding a tailored treatment approach based on how your balance system is functioning.

A structured assessment helps us understand how your inner ear, eyes and body are working together to maintain balance. This typically involves looking at:

🔷 Balance and postural control
🔷 Coordination and movement strategies
🔷 Eye movements and visual tracking (which are closely linked to the vestibular system)
🔷 Symptom response to specific head and body positions

From there, treatment is individualised and may include targeted exercises, repositioning techniques, movement retraining and education to help you better understand and manage your symptoms.

Some conditions, such as BPPV, can often improve quite quickly with specific treatment techniques.

Others may require a more gradual rehabilitation process over several sessions, particularly when symptoms have been present for longer periods or involve a combination of contributing factors.

The overall goal is to reduce dizziness, improve balance and rebuild confidence with everyday movement.

What causes symptoms of dizziness?

Dizziness and vertigo aren’t conditions in themselves but symptoms that can arise from a range of different systems in the body - most commonly the inner ear, neck or brain.

Understanding the underlying cause is key to finding the most effective treatment.

Some of the more common causes include:

🔷 Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): brief episodes of spinning triggered by changes in head position.
🔷 Inner ear disturbances: affecting the vestibular system, which helps control balance and spatial awareness.
🔷 Neck-related (cervicogenic) dizziness: where dysfunction in the neck contributes to a sense of imbalance or unsteadiness.
🔷 Post-concussion symptoms: dizziness that can persist following a head injury.
🔷 Migraine-related dizziness: where vestibular symptoms occur with or without a headache.

Because these conditions can present in very similar ways, it’s not always straightforward to pinpoint the exact cause without a detailed and structured assessment.

A thorough assessment will help guide the right diagnosis and ensure treatment is targeted to what’s actually driving your symptoms.

Dizziness, vertigo or feeling off-balance? Here’s what your symptoms might actually be telling you.

Sensations of dizziness or vertigo can significantly affect your confidence with walking, working, driving and everyday movement.

For some people, symptoms come on suddenly and strongly, while for others they build gradually and become more noticeable over time.

Because the balance system is complex (involving your inner ear, vision and body’s sense of position), dizziness can look and feel different from person to person.

Common ways it may present include:

🔷 A spinning sensation (often described as vertigo)
🔷 Feeling lightheaded, foggy or faint
🔷 Unsteadiness or loss of balance when standing or walking
🔷 Difficulty keeping vision clear during head or body movement
🔷 Symptoms triggered by turning your head, rolling in bed or changing position
🔷 Nausea linked with movement or visual input
🔷 Increased symptoms in busy environments like supermarkets, crowds or scrolling screens

Understanding your symptoms is an important first step in identifying what might be driving them, and what can be done to help improve them.

Our approach is centred on understanding the whole person, not just the symptom.

We provide personalised, evidence-based physiotherapy for people who want clear answers, thorough assessment, and care that feels considered rather than rushed.

We know that choosing a physiotherapist is really about trust. You want to feel listened to, have your concerns taken seriously, and leave with a clear understanding of what’s going on and what the plan looks like.

That’s why every consultation is individualised, shaped around your goals, your lifestyle and what you want to get back to doing, not just the area of pain or injury.

We take the time to assess properly, explain findings in a way that makes sense, and develop a treatment plan that supports recovery and long-term confidence in how you move.
