What does that do?

This is one of those "desert island" instruments for many optometrists and that is especially true in our practice. If I was limited to what instruments I could use, this one would be at the top of my short-list.

Meet the retinoscope.

French physician Ferdinand Monoyer is credited for it's origins in 1873 and it remains an important tool in optometry. Often bought as a kit with a direct ophthalmoscope, it is one of the first professional tools and optometrist buys while completing their qualifications.
It is used to understand how people focus and is often the starting point to work out what your distance prescription is. In addition, we use it a lot to understand how people focus at near and to understand what we can do to help make that better.
It is considered an "objective" measurement, meaning the optometrist gets data and information by looking without necessarily needing verbal feedback or confirmation from the patient (that is called "subjective" for reference).
This particularly useful in babies, children, or in situations where verbal communication is difficult. It allows the optometrist to move into a position that might suit people in wheelchairs or who are bedridden.
Again, like all optometry instruments they are not cheap, but they do tend to last your entire career. The only negative is trying to travel with it through airports without attracting some scrutiny...

What does that do?
Moving out of the consulting room this time and into our dispensing area to meet.... our pupillometer. Our optical team, Michelle and Alex are demonstrating how it is used. As the name suggests it is used to measure pupils.
Some pupillometers measure the size of your pupils. This one is used to measure how far apart your pupils are. This is known as the PD, or pupillary distance, and is another part of your spectacle prescription.
So it's not just the power of your lenses that is important. Where the centre of the lenses sit in front of your eyes is also very important and this device helps us work out that out. It's another part of how your glasses are made just for you.
