Lisa and Toni have developed a unique approach in water “Neuroaquatics”™, influenced by principles of Feldenkrais, motor learning, neuroplasticity and pain management. Lisa Gilkes and Toni Fuller are both highly skilled physiotherapists and Feldenkrais Practitioners. They have combined their wealth of experience to develop a unique treatment approach in water called "Neuroaquatics"™.This approach

is influenced by Feldenkrais principles and the most recent research on motor learning, brain neuroplasticity and pain management. Neuroaquatics™ offers a dynamic, innovative and creative approach that facilitates learning and empowers the individual in their rehabilitation. Toni has a special interest in working with children with special needs and has now taken on more of a consultative role. Lisa works full time in the pool within her practice at Club Active. Whether you are suffering from chronic pain, arthritis, recovering from an injury or surgery, struggling to move after a stroke or having balance and general mobility issues, aquatic physiotherapy can help.

Finally an Australian made headfloat that holds the head in neutral. I worked with Toni for 25 years and she has designed these fantastic floats. I have used the ones I bought from her for the last 10 years and wouldn’t be without them. They are made to order on the Gold Coast. To order go to:

Designed for clinical aquatic therapy, the MM Aqua Float provides gentle, stable buoyancy without restricting movement, supporting rehabilitation, mobility, and client confidence.

What does an internationally renowned anthropologist have to do with the way you move?

More than you might think.

When Dr. Margaret Mead challenged Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais to explain why a specific community of exquisite dancers struggled to cross their arms and tap their knees, his answer surprised her:

“As babies, they don’t get to crawl enough.”

Mead was stunned. The community held a cultural belief that crawling made children like animals, so they carried infants until they could stand.

That single exchange sparked a lifelong friendship and turned Mead into a staunch advocate of the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education. She famously noted its profound ability to prevent and reverse the "deterioration of function."

In our latest edition of SenseAbility, we’re diving deep into the evolution of human movement and what our developmental blueprint (like crawling!) can teach us about moving with more comfort, efficiency, and ease today.

This 2-day, practical workshop will provide an opportunity for physiotherapists to refine their observation skills, improve their ability to identify movement patterning that may be impacting function and learn a variety of land and water based strategies to improve movement quality, reduce pain and sustain functional gain. Musculoskeletal, neurological, persistent pain and some paediatric groups will be considered.

🌱 Most of the people are familiar with the Feldenkrais Method through the “Awareness through movement” classes in which the teacher guides the students through different movements that are usually slow, gentle, focusing on the somatic feedback, rather than the external aesthetics. But there is this whole other world within the Feldenkrais Method that is called “Functional Integration”.

🌿 And what is Functional Integration?
The use of non-invasive, gentle touch as the primary means of communication between the practitioner and the person. It is usually performed at a slow pace on a massage table and lasts more or less 60 minutes. The intention of the practitioner is to help the person re-integrate parts of itself that might have been forgotten for different reasons: injuries, accidents, trauma, difficult experiences, chronic pain. The hands of the practitioner suggest other possible pathways for habitual movement patterns that might not be serving the person anymore. The approach is flexible and the focus goes to what the person needs.

🙌 Find the closest practitioner in your city and try a session!

What an amazing 2 weeks in South Africa. The SA Physiotherapy Society invited Toni and I to teach their Aquatic Physios our approach in water. We did 4 days of teaching which included treating clients with their physios on the last day. There were quite a few children and Toni was on fire. She absolutely shone. They loved it and the feedback was amazing. Incredibly satisfying after 23 years of working together. We then did a four day Safari in Kruger National Park which was also incredible. Here are a few photos.
