Did you know I support families with twins, triplets and beyond?!

They may have been born at the same time but each child is still an individual regardless of whether they are a twin, triplet or beyond.

They will have 👇

👶Different temperaments & personalities - one child may adapt much more quickly than the other.

👶Different sleep needs - they may not naturally be tired or ready for sleep at the same time.

👶Different settling preferences - what works beautifully for one may not work for the other.

👶Waking each other - particularly during night wakes or naps.

👶Developmental changes/regressions — one child may be going through a sleep disruption while the other isn't.

👶And one may be the perfect sleeper but the other/others may face challenges.

When working with a family of multiples I look at various strategies and methods and adapt accordingly, depending on the individual child and family and what their goals are.

If this is something you are struggling with we can work towards a solution. Follow the link 🔗 in my bio to book your FREE 15- minute discovery call.

Red flag Friday ⛳️

Today I am discussing mouth breathing.

This photo reminded me why I always encourage parents to pay attention to persistent mouth breathing. It's something we're having assessed again too.

Sleep-disordered breathing occurs when a child's breathing is partially or repeatedly disrupted during sleep. This can make their body feel as though it needs to work harder to breathe, leading to restless, poor-quality sleep.

When this happens, a child's body may trigger its natural stress response, causing frequent waking, difficulty settling back to sleep, or unsettled nights. Over time, disrupted breathing can affect both the quality and quantity of sleep they get.

Babies are naturally designed to breathe through their noses.

Nasal breathing helps to:

* Filter and warm the air they breathe
* Support healthy oxygen and carbon dioxide regulation
* Promote deeper, more restorative sleep

Persistent mouth breathing is one possible sign of sleep-disordered breathing

The signs of sleep-disordered breathing often fall into two categories: what you notice during the day and what you notice during the night

Awake behaviours

* Irritability
* Regular mouth-open posture
* High energy levels or hyperactivity
* Dark circles under the eyes
* Challenging behaviour
* Daytime tiredness
* Emotional sensitivity
* Frequent blocked or congested nose
* Poor appetite or fussy eating

Sleep behaviours

* Loud or noisy breathing
* Regular snoring
* Sweating during sleep
* Restless sleep
* Coughing, choking or spluttering during sleep
* Bedwetting
* Sleeping with their mouth open
* Brief pauses in breathing
* Frequent night waking or inconsistent sleep
* Sleeping with their head tilted backwards
* Parasomnias (such as sleepwalking, night terrors or confusional arousals

I believe that every child has the potential to sleep well.

I believe in fixing a problem rather than placing a Band-Aid over it.

This is all covered and broken down in your sleep assessment, and it is completely your choice to pursue it further.

Some children need sleep support; others need underlying concerns addressed first. I take an honest, individual approach with every family.

When your child's sleep isn't going to plan, it's completely understandable that you may start looking for solutions and want to switch things up. Before you start to implement new strategies ask yourself:

* Why is this happening?

* Is your child overtired?

* Are their awake times right for their age?

* Is there something affecting their comfort, routine or environment?

Looking at the root cause is often the key to creating lasting sleep changes 🤍

🚩 Tomorrow for Red Flag Friday • I'll be sharing some signs that your child's sleep struggles may need a closer look.

I know when something doesn't quite add up.

You think you have nailed their sleep patterns and boom 💣 you hit a sleep progression.

Sleep progressions often referred to as regressions are predictable stages of development when your child's sleep may temporarily become disrupted. These progressions usually coincide with developmental milestones and changes in brain or emotional development. There are 5 in total.

Today I'm here to talk about the 18-Month progression.

This progression can start anywhere between the ages of 16 and 20 months. It is related to cognitive development. Your toddler's language comprehension and communication abilities rapidly increase at this age. This, combined with another wave of separation anxiety, can lead to disrupted sleep, even in children who were previously sleeping well.

How to navigate it.

During a sleep progression, your calm, confident approach can make all the difference. Babies and young children often pick up on our emotions, so if you feel anxious or uncertain, they may become more unsettled too.

Try to avoid making changes to your overall sleep approach during this time. Consistency is key, so maintaining their usual nap schedules and duration is important, persist with your chosen settling method and go back to basics with sleep training if needed.

Sleep progressions are a normal part of development and usually pass within 4-6 weeks.

If you have a question about progressions my inbox is always open 😊

If I were a new Mum again, this is the sleep advice I would give myself:

* Stop chasing the perfect routine. Honestly, there is so much pressure around this. Consistency matters more than perfection.

* Don't compare yourself to others. Every family and baby is different, with different values, beliefs and temperaments. You do you.

* Enjoy this exciting new stage. It goes way too fast to sweat the small stuff.

* Ask for help. We all need our village, don't be afraid to ask for help.

* Night Wakes are normal. Night waking doesn't mean something is wrong, familiarise yourself with age-appropriate routines.

* Protect our well-being. We matter too. We can't pour from an empty cup.

* Educate myself more about sleep. I would tell myself to learn about sleep regressions, developmental leaps and the 5S's.

I was so grateful for my midwives, antenatal classes, and all the advice that helped me prepare for birth.
But looking back, I wish I'd also prepared for what came after.

If I could do it all again, I'd start following trusted sleep consultants during my pregnancy, not because I expected my babies to sleep through the night, but because I'd have gone into motherhood with a different outlook around sleep and so much more confidence.

My newborn e-book is filled with the information I wish I'd known as a first-time mum. From awake windows, tired signs, routines, safe sleeping, sleep science, behaviour and development, the missing 4th trimester and much more this e-book has it all to get you thinking about solid sleep foundations to set you and your family up for success and it's available via my website.

🤒 When little ones are unwell, its ok for routines to take a back seat.

My youngest is currently sick, he didn't wake until nearly 8.00 am yesterday morning and an hour later he fell asleep and had another hour and 30 mins and was still in bed by his usual bedtime.

When treating illnesses such as gastro, fevers, a virus or infections needing antibiotics, I would highly recommend allowing your little one to sleep more than usual without waking them up. Abandon the sleep schedule, and give them plenty of rest. More sleep will help to burn off any infection. Resume back to the normal nap schedule when they are on the mend.

Because a few more days of extra cuddles will not undo healthy sleep habits ❤️

If you have any questions around sickness and sleep please feel free to reach out.
