Dr Qing Li, a Japanese-based immunologist originally from China, dedicated over two decades to scientifically validating the healing power of nature through the practice of shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing”. His pioneering research focused on phytoncides, which are natural antimicrobial compounds and essential oils released by trees like cedars and pines to protect themselves from insects and disease. 🌳🌿

Through rigorous clinical studies, Dr. Li demonstrated that when humans inhale these airborne chemicals during a walk in the woods, the compounds enter the bloodstream and trigger profound physiological changes.

His work effectively bridged the gap between ancient intuitive wisdom and modern biological science, proving that the forest acts as a natural medicine cabinet.

Dr. Li’s breakthrough findings revealed that these plant chemicals actively hunt down and reduce stress hormones while simultaneously supercharging the human immune system. His testing showed that exposure to phytoncides significantly decreases levels of cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline in the body. More importantly, his 20 years of research proved that breathing in the forest air dramatically boosts the activity and number of natural killer (NK) cells, a type of white blood cell vital for fighting off viruses and tumor cells.

LRemarkably, Dr. Li discovered that a single two-day trip to a forest could enhance NK cell activity for up to 30 days, providing conclusive evidence that trees physically alter our blood chemistry to fight stress and disease.

It can look the same from the outside.
Someone goes quiet, stops responding and pulls away in the middle of a conversation.
But what’s happening underneath isn’t always the same.
Sometimes a partner shuts down because they’re overwhelmed. Their body is in fight or flight, their heart rate is up, and they’re trying not to make things worse. That’s stonewalling.
Other times, the silence is intentional. It’s used to shut the other person out or create distance. That’s the silent treatment.
If you’ve been on the receiving end, you know how uncomfortable that can feel.
Understanding the difference helps you respond in a way that actually moves the conversation forward instead of getting stuck in the same loop.

True, deep relationships require your total, undivided presence.. not just the spare moments between notifications... ❤️

The honeymoon doesn't end because something went wrong. It ends because you're finally seeing each other clearly.

The couples who make it are the ones who learn to love what they see, not what they imagined.

We tend to complicate relationships.
Advice comes from everywhere—friends, podcasts, timelines—and somewhere along the way, marriage starts to feel like something to manage, not something to live.

But Serena brought it back to three quiet anchors.

First, the two of you—face to face. The part where you stay connected, not just as partners, but as people who still choose to see each other, every day.

Then, side by side. The life you build together—showing up as a unit, extending yourselves beyond just the relationship, into the world around you.

And finally, back to back. Not distance—but trust. The kind that allows each person to turn toward their own path, knowing they’re supported, not restricted.

It’s simple. Almost disarmingly so. But maybe that’s the point.

Because sometimes, the strongest marriages aren’t the most complex ones—they’re the ones that quietly hold these three directions at once.

For many families, the hardest part of serious mental illness isn’t just the diagnosis; it’s the feeling that nothing is working.

After ’s first manic psychotic episode, his family did everything they were told to do. He became sober, followed his treatment plan, and tried 29 different medications, including nine antipsychotics.

Yet years later, he still wasn’t himself.

It wasn’t until he started a therapeutic ketogenic diet under medical supervision that Matthew experienced a dramatic turnaround. Within months, his symptoms resolved, and nearly five years later, they have not returned.

Emerging research in metabolic psychiatry suggests that brain energy metabolism may play a role in disorders like bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. For some individuals, therapies that target metabolism may help support brain function through multiple mechanisms that we are still working to fully understand.

Every person’s journey is different. But stories like this remind us why continued research into metabolism and brain health matters so much.

In 1952, hysteria became a formal diagnosis in the DSM. Hysteria was a term for women who: had high anxiety, impulsivity, “dramatic of theatrical behavior” and “emotional outbursts.” Physical symptoms included sudden movements and sleep disturbances.

During Sigmund Freud’s era, women were brought into treatment by their husbands. Freud was the first to uncover these women had one common experience: childhood abuse.

What happened next would become one of the biggest coverups in psychology’s history.

Freud listened to hours to women’s stories of abuse and trauma. He believed them. Men, who were paying for treatment, were obviously not happy that their wives were exposing what went on in their childhood homes, and their marriages. Freud treated the wealthy class in Vienna, and there’s evidence that this connection created pressure for his silence. During this time he suddenly crafter a new narrative. That women created these false memories and stories based on their own fantasies.

Treatment for hysteria involved things I can’t share on Instagram. This only compounded trauma.

During this era, psychologists who were almost entirely male, failed to look at any root causes of hysteria. Decades of research were lost, and women’s lived experiences were denied immediately by the field claiming to treat them.

In 1980, hysteria was formally removed as a diagnosis. The same year, borderline personality disorder was created and entered in the DSM. 75% of people diagnosed are women. And once again, the label was a “personality disorder” instead of understanding that these were people experiencing PTSD.

In my early practice, I treated several people treated with borderline personality disorder. All were turned away from several therapists afraid to treat them. All experienced abuse, neglect, and complex trauma. Almost all were medicated (at high doses) during their teenage years. All most all had their reality denied by someone they loved. The stigma remains.

Imagine how many people we can help when we understand what post traumatic stress does to the mind, body, and soul. Imagine if we stopped calling people disordered, and start

When we focus more on our phones than the person sitting next to us, we can experience a sense of ambiguous loss.
