Benefits of Exercise for Hypertension (HTN)

▪️Exercise is one of the most evidence-based tools we have for managing HTN, and the effects can be significant with as little as 30 minutes a day. It’s not about being an athlete. It’s about moving more than you did yesterday.

▫️ High blood pressure doesn’t appear out of nowhere.
Common risk factors include:
• Inactivity
• Poor diet (i.e high salt, low veg)
• Excess weight
• Chronic stress
• Smoking & alcohol
• Poor sleep or sleep apnoea
• Family history & age

▪️ Let’s get moving and change the way we age!

We love dual-task training and the clock yourself app is a great example of this!

It combines stepping drills with cognitive challenges, simultaneously.

We use it as part of our balance and falls prevention work and our clients love it!
There are also many ways to increase the difficulty with this task, so you can continue to progress.

Some key benefits of this training include:
▪️Improved stepping speed and reaction time
▫️Increased balance, coordination and proprioception
▪️Challenges working memory and processing speed
▫️Trains movement in all directions
▪️ Reduced falls risk
▫️Can be progressed for cardiovascular benefits for some individuals

Thanks to EP Aylish for the demo! 🙌

Benefits of Exercise for Osteoporosis

▪️ Our bones respond to load, that’s how they get stronger 🦴

▫️If you have osteoporosis (or want to prevent it), the right exercise program can improve bone mineral density, muscular strength, balance and posture.
All of the above reduce your risk of sustaining a fracture and/or a fall.

▪️In Australia, 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men over the age of 60 will have an osteoporotic fracture, with the risk of fractures compounding with each fracture that is sustained.

▫️Not sure where to start? We’re here to help. No one person’s situation is the same and we tailor your care to your current presentation.

Sit to Stand Progressions - brought to you by EP Aylish 💪

▪️Can you stand up from a chair without using your hands?

▫️It sounds simple but the sit-to-stand is one of the most powerful indicators of lower limb strength, balance, and everyday independence.

▪️Sitting and standing are tasks that we generally have to complete multiple times a day; getting out of bed, getting into cars and on and off the toilet. As we age, this task can be slow and challenging, especially if we aren’t progressing this movement!

▫️In fact, research also shows that how well you perform sit-to-stand is linked to fall risk, functional decline, and even long-term health outcomes.

▪️If you can get up from a chair with confidence, you can take on the world 👊

At Agile EP, we use sit-to-stand progressions to build the foundation for real-life movement:
▪️Lower limb strength & control
▫️Balance and stability
▪️Reduced fall risk
▫️Greater independence in daily life

Here are some safety tips before you get started:
▫️Place your chair against a wall so it doesn’t slide out from under you 🪑
▪️If your balance isn’t great, position your 4-wheel walker in front for support
▫️Always wear supportive, non-slip footwear
▪️Slow and steady wins the race, especially as you descend back onto the chair
▫️Try and minimise the use of your hands. Notice these changes over time as your leg strength and confidence with standing increases! 🙌🏽

▪️There are so many ways this movement can be progressed and regressed. Our EPs will always meet you at your current level and challenge you to get better each day!

Welcome to the team Aylish! 👋

▪️Aylish studied her Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology degree at Deakin University in Melbourne where she lived for the past 8-9 years. Aylish moved up to the Gold Coast at the start of the year and she is absolutely loving living in the sunny state!

▪️Aylish became an Accredited Exercise Physiologist as she has a passion for helping people and loves empowering people to live healthier lives. She has a passion for neurological rehabilitation (the brain is so incredible), falls prevention and working with older adults.

▪️Outside of work Aylish spends a lot of time at the beach, reading books and enjoying all things crafting (junk journalling, crocheting, sewing, pottery).
