A day of art, breath, connection and a little bit of left-field creativity
I spent today at the Community Art Day organised by Rotary Club of Coomera Rivers, with my son.
The event followed an art auction the night before, raising money supporting mental health and the day itself was a beautiful reminder of how creativity and connection can support our wellbeing.
I loved getting lost in painting, while also learning some practical breathwork techniques with Lisa. One simple practice was to gently blow on your thumb and notice the sensation.
Perhaps one day, it may just smile back at you.
We were given the task of painting a vase of flowers.
Well… I decided to go a little left field!
I had no idea what I was painting. I was simply playing with colour, shapes and paint and somewhere along the way, I completely lost track of time.
And isn't that something we often don't give ourselves enough permission to do?
To create without needing to know where it's going.
To play without needing to be good at it.
To simply enjoy the moment.
There was also a conversation about left-handed people — which made me smile. My mum was naturally left-handed, I am, and one of my sons is too.
But one of my favourite moments came from a conversation with another mum.
She had painted a beautiful vase of flowers. I asked if she painted regularly.
She told me she was simply accompanying her daughter but she used to paint and create regularly, including rangoli, the intricate Indian designs from her home country.
She hadn't done it in a while.
And it got me wondering...
How many of us have stopped doing something we once loved?
Something creative.
Something playful.
Something that made us lose track of time.
Something that was simply ours.
Maybe life got busy.
Maybe parenting took over.
Maybe work, responsibilities or the many roles we carry slowly pushed it to the side.
Perhaps creativity isn't always about becoming an artist.
Perhaps sometimes it's about finding a little piece of ourselves again.
And maybe that's where we begin to reconnect, rediscover and reignite.
What is something you used to love doing that you haven't done in a while?
