This interview with Cathy Freeman offers a great example of the 'Task Focused' mindset over the 'Ego Focused' mindset. i.e., the intrinsic drive for self improvement (being the best I can be) overriding the extrinsic drive of simply wanting to win the race (being better than everyone else).

While the high achieving mindset will have a mix of both, it is ultimately the task focus that needs to reign over the ego focus for a healthy, resilient and personally fulfilling approach to sport and other high achieving goals.
