Starting solids is about so much more than nutrition.

Every time your baby progresses from smooth purées to thicker textures, finger foods and self-feeding, they’re learning new ways to use their lips, tongue and jaw. Those same structures and many of the same movement patterns also become part of the foundation for both eating and later speech.

That doesn’t mean solid foods “teach babies to talk”, they do give babies opportunities to develop the coordination, oral awareness and motor planning that both eating and speech rely on.

As a paediatric speech pathologist, these are the little things I’m watching during mealtimes that many parents don’t even realise are happening.

What surprised you most? I’d love to know in the comments. 💛

One of the biggest myths I see online is that every child should learn the word or sign ‘more’ first.

Don’t get me wrong ‘more’ is a fantastic word and I use it all the time in therapy. But if it’s the only word we’re focusing on, we can miss so many meaningful opportunities for communication.

Instead of chasing one ‘perfect’ first word, start noticing what genuinely motivates your child. It might be a favourite food, a favourite place, a beloved toy, a family member, or a phrase they hear over and over again. When language is meaningful and motivating, children are much more likely to engage with it.

There isn’t a magic list of first words that works for every child. The goal isn’t to tick off a checklist, it’s to help your child communicate what matters to them, whether that’s through speech, gestures, Key Word Sign or AAC.

Did you know these communication boards aren’t just for people who use a communication device? 💙

Visual communication supports can help so many different communicators.

They can support understanding, build language through modelling, make it easier to make choices, and provide another way to communicate when words feel tricky.

Whether it’s in the clinic, at home or in the classroom, having these supports available means communication is always accessible—not just when someone is struggling.

That’s why we’re creating aided language displays for every therapy room and activity at Embrace. We want communication supports to be available whenever they’re needed.

Because communication is about so much more than speech. Everyone deserves to be understood.

I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to “teach” our babies.

But honestly… some of the best opportunities to support communication happen in the little moments throughout the day.

Reading the same book again. Chatting on a pram walk. Singing nursery rhymes. Sitting together at mealtimes. Making silly faces. Using a few simple signs.

None of it is complicated. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be shared.

These are a few of the things we’re doing at home with Leo at the moment. ❤️

What’s your little one’s favourite activity at the moment?

Some of the biggest wins don’t look like much to anyone else. A new word, trying a food, getting through a haircut, joining in with other children, or making it through an outing without becoming overwhelmed.

They might seem small from the outside, but you know how much work went into that moment. The appointments, the waiting lists, the advocating, the researching, the practising, the setbacks and the trying again. So if you’re celebrating something that other people don’t quite understand, celebrate it anyway. Because those wins matter, and they’re often much bigger than they look.

What sounds should my child be saying? 👀

One of the most common questions we get as speech pathologists is about speech sound development and when certain sounds are expected to appear.

The truth is, speech sounds don’t all develop at once. Some sounds emerge early, while others aren’t expected until much later than many parents realise!

In this reel, we’re sharing a general guide to speech sound milestones, speech development by age, and when different sounds typically emerge.

A few things to keep in mind:
- Every child develops at their own pace
- Speech milestones are a guide, not a checklist
- We look at overall speech clarity (intelligibility), progress over time, and how well a child can communicate their message

If you’re concerned about your child’s speech development, early support can make a big difference 🧡
