Fight or flight response in the present comes from an interpretation of a moment in the past. Working subconsciously can change how something from your past affects your present.

Ever notice that going over something painful again and again can sometimes make it feel bigger, not smaller?

That’s your brain doing exactly what it’s built to do… linking memories that share a similar emotional feeling, so pulling on one can bring several more along with it.

Understanding why it happens is a great first step. But real change often needs more than insight… it takes the right kind of subconscious work to actually untie the emotional charge from the memory itself, so it stops setting off alarms in your present.

That’s the work I do with clients here in Ballina and Lismore and online.

If this sounds familiar, save this post or send it to someone who keeps talking about the same thing without ever feeling lighter. 💙

Here's the thing about anxiety, overthinking, the drinking, the va**ng, the weight, or that habit you can't shake. It's not a character flaw. It's a prediction.

Somewhere along the way your unconscious mind decided this is how we stay safe, and it's been running the pattern ever since. You didn't choose it, and you can't willpower your way out of it, because it's running long before you get a say.

But you can change the prediction. And when you do, there's nothing left to manage. It just stops. Usually faster than people expect.

Swipe through to see how it works. Then if you want to know what it would look like for your thing, book a free chat. https://www.helen.net.au Tell me what you want to change and I'll tell you exactly how we'd fix it.

Your brain decides what’s about to happen before you get a say. Then it creates the feeling or behaviour to match.
That’s why willpower doesn’t work. You’re arguing with a decision that’s already been made.
But predictions can be changed. And when they change, the anxiety, the habit, the overthinking just stops. Nothing left to manage. Usually faster than people expect.
If you want to know how that would work for your thing, book a free chat. Link in bio. Tell me what you want to change and I’ll tell you exactly how we’d fix it.

Stop trying to consciously manage your problem. 90% of behaviour and emotional responses are unconscious. Change the unconscious programming and there is no problem to manage. Https://helen.net.au

You know that little jolt when a step is higher or lower than you expected? That’s your brain predicting the world before you’re even conscious of it and it’s the same mechanism behind anxiety. Full explanation + how to change it 👇

You know that little shock you get when you take a step and the ground is just a bit higher or lower than you thought it was going to be?

Your whole body goes, "Woah." Just for a split second.

And then you keep walking.

Here's the thing though. In that moment, your brain just got caught out predicting something you didn't even know you were predicting. Your brain wasn't waiting to see where the ground was. It had already decided. It was so sure, it didn't even bother telling you about it.

That's your brain in a nutshell. It's a prediction machine. It's constantly running ahead of you, making calls about what's about to happen based on everything you've ever experienced.

Most of the time, this is brilliant. You'd never get out the door in the morning if you had to consciously process every single thing.

But this is also exactly what's behind a lot of anxiety.

Because your nervous system doesn't just predict where the ground is. It also predicts whether you're safe.

So if somewhere along the way it learned that a certain situation, a certain feeling, a certain type of person or place means danger, it'll predict that every single time. In a fraction of a second. Long before your conscious mind is even aware anything is happening.

That's why by the time you're trying to breathe through it or talk yourself down, the fight-or-flight response has already fired. You're not doing it wrong. You're just trying to override something that was already in motion.

The approach I take isn't about teaching you better ways to manage the response. It's about changing the prediction underneath it. When the unconscious expectation updates, the automatic response updates with it. No prediction of danger, no automatic anxiety response. You just find yourself doing the thing, having the conversation, going to the place, and you realise afterwards that you didn't think twice about it.

I'm a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Master NLP Practitioner, and I'm also currently studying neuroscience. I've been fascinated by this stuff for a long time. Honestly, the more I understand about how the brain works, the more it makes sense why the approaches I use work as well as they do.

If you're curious about whether this might be the thing that actually shifts your anxiety rather than just managing it, come and have a chat with me. It's free, it's 15 minutes, and you'll leave knowing a lot more about what's actually going on for you.

“I’ll just v**e instead, it’s not as bad”

That’s the little story a lot of brains are running right now. Then suddenly it’s:
• First thing in the morning
• All through work
• In the car
• Before bed

Va**ng lights up the same “feel better now” circuits in your brain that smoking does. Your unconscious mind doesn’t care whether it’s a cigarette or a mango‑ice cloud, it just knows... “This changes how I feel.”

In a quit va**ng session we unpack the *real* job your brain is trying to do with that device (calm, focus, reward, escape…), then we give it better tools and put va**ng on your internal NO list. Most people are surprised by how calm they feel without it.

If you’re sick of planning your day around your v**e, send me a DM with the word “VAPE” or book a free 15 minute chat and I’ll explain how my process works.
