👵👴🦴 As we age, back pain becomes more common - and for many older Australians, it can develop into chronic pain that affects more than just movement.

Low back pain is one of the most common health issues affecting older Australians. Whether it occurs on its own or alongside conditions such as osteoporosis or osteoarthritis, it can significantly limit mobility and everyday activities, impacting independence and quality of life.

But the effects aren’t just physical. Ongoing back pain can also impact mental wellbeing, contributing to stress, frustration, social isolation, reduced confidence, fatigue, and a decline in overall quality of life.

Around 4 in 5 Australians will experience back pain at some point in their lives, and for older adults, the risk of ongoing or chronic symptoms increases with age.

The good news is that there are steps you can take to support your spinal health at any age:
✔ Keep moving with regular physical activity
✔ Maintain strength, balance, and flexibility
✔ Stay socially connected and engaged
✔ Address aches and pains early
✔ Seek appropriate healthcare advice when needed

This Spinal Health Month, remember that it’s never too late to prioritise your spinal health. Looking after your spine can help you maintain your independence, stay connected to the people and activities you love, and continue enjoying life to the fullest.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Spinal health is a family affair.

From growing kids carrying school bags to busy parents juggling work, family, and everyday responsibilities, looking after your spine is important at every stage of life.

When back pain develops, it doesn’t just affect physical health. Ongoing discomfort can make daily tasks more challenging, reduce participation in activities you enjoy, and contribute to increased stress, fatigue, and mental strain.

Modern lifestyles often involve more sitting, more screen time, and less movement than ever before. Over time, these habits can impact spinal health for both adults and children.

The good news? Small daily habits can make a big difference:
✔ Encourage regular movement and active play
✔ Take breaks from screens and prolonged sitting
✔ Check school bags are fitted correctly and not overloaded
✔ Support good posture at home, school, and work
✔ Stay active as a family whenever possible

Healthy spinal habits developed early can support physical wellbeing, confidence, and resilience throughout life.

This Spinal Health Month, take a proactive approach to your family’s spinal health. Because a healthy spine supports a healthy mind.

💻🏗️ Whether you’re sitting at a desk, driving long distances, working on the tools, or spending all day on your feet, your daily habits can have a big impact on your spinal health.

Many cases of back pain develop gradually over time due to repetitive movements, prolonged sitting, poor ergonomics, heavy lifting, or sustained postures. What starts as occasional stiffness or discomfort can eventually affect work, exercise, sleep, and everyday activities.

Some simple ways to look after your spine include:
✅ Taking regular movement breaks throughout the day
✅ Setting up your workstation correctly
✅ Using safe lifting techniques
✅ Staying active and maintaining strength and mobility
✅ Addressing aches and pains before they become ongoing problems

Spinal Health Month is a great reminder that prevention is often easier than recovery. Looking after your spine today can help keep you moving comfortably for years to come.

If you’ve been putting up with back pain, don’t wait until it starts limiting the things you enjoy.

Back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and affects millions of Australians every year. While many people think of back pain as purely physical, it can also impact mental wellbeing, contributing to stress, fatigue, reduced activity levels, and a lower quality of life.

This year’s Spinal Health Month encourages Australians to “Adjust Your Thinking” and recognise the important connection between spinal health and mental health.

The good news? Early intervention, regular movement, and appropriate healthcare can make a significant difference in managing back pain and helping you stay active and healthy.
Because a healthy spine supports a healthy mind.

⚠️ Images of Cadavers will be included in the reel -

Over the weekend, Nicole and I (Matilda) headed down to Melbourne for an Osteopathic Approach to Paediatrics course hosted by Wisdom Exchange 📚

The course was led by Jamie Taylor, who brings years of experience treating children of all ages 👶🧒. Across the three days, we explored a wide range of assessments, presentations, and treatment strategies to better support our paediatric patients. We also learned valuable ways to guide and educate parents throughout their journey!

We absolutely loved the balance of theory and hands-on practical learning 🙌, and it was great to see how some techniques can also be applied to our adult patients too!

In our downtime, we couldn’t quite switch off our osteo brains so we visited the Bodyworlds exhibit 🦴 (as pictured above). It’s an incredible display that really highlights just how intricate and amazing the human body is 💪🏼🫀🧠

Overall, it was an amazing weekend filled with learning, growth, and a bit of fun along the way ✨

P.S. Feel free to ask Nicole how she really feels about plane turbulence 😅
