Do people still write newspaper obituaries?

Before the internet and social media, newspapers were the primary way families shared news of a loved one's passing.

Funeral notices informed friends, neighbours and the wider community of a person's death, while also providing details of the funeral service so those wishing to pay their respects could attend.

Last Thursday Gregory and Carr Funerals had the honour of conducting a Funeral Service at St Philip's Anglican Church.

St Philip's has a long and enduring history in Sydney. Whilst the current sandstone church was built between 1848 and 1858, designed by renowned colonial architect Edmund Blacket, the parish itself traces its origins back to 1793. This makes it the oldest Anglican parish in Australia.

The church occupies a site rich in Australian history. It stands on Church Hill, close to where Sydney's earliest Anglican churches served the fledgling colony, and remains a tangible link to the city's colonial beginnings. Today, St Philip's continues to welcome worshippers, visitors and those seeking a quiet place for reflection amid the city's fast pace.

With its remarkable architecture, heritage significance and enduring presence in the heart of Sydney, St Philip's is not only a treasured landmark, but also a beautiful setting for families to gather in celebration and remembrance.
