Thank you to Pia for sharing this article published by Frontiers in Psychology, regarding the Double Empathy Problem; research suggesting that communication difficulties between autistic and non-autistic people are mutual, not one-sided.

https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.586171/full

The key take being: Social difficulty in autism is better understood as a mismatch in communication styles between neurotypes, rather than a deficit within autistic individuals.

This reframes autism as a difference in interaction style, and highlights that rapport depends on mutual understanding, not one-sided skill.

The Double Empathy Theory suggests that communicative difficulties between autistic and non-autistic people are due to bi-directional differences in communic...

🌏 Webinar Promotion | Culturally Responsive CBT in Practice | Saturday 23 May

Australia is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse nations, yet evidence-based psychological treatments are not always adapted to meet the needs of CALD clients—particularly those with limited English proficiency and older migrants, who are at increased risk of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

Join Dr Jessamine Chen (Macquarie University) for a practical, practice-focused webinar exploring how to effectively adapt Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for culturally and linguistically diverse clients—while maintaining treatment fidelity.

This session will cover:
• Current evidence for culturally adapted CBT
• Key principles for culturally and linguistically responsive practice
• Common clinician “traps” when working with CALD clients
• Practical strategies for improving engagement and outcomes
• Case examples across assessment, formulation, and treatment planning

Participants will also take part in interactive learning, including breakout room role plays to practise real-world application of culturally adapted CBT techniques.

Ideal for clinicians and therapists working with multicultural communities or seeking to strengthen culturally responsive practice.

Thank you Brianna for sharing this information from Monique Mitchelson (Clinical Psychologist, The Neurodivergent Woman Podcast) regarding signs of Autistic burnout and ways to manage.

Behavioural activation (increasing activity) during acute autistic burnout can be unhelpful and may worsen burnout due to added sensory and nervous system load. It’s often better introduced gradually after burnout has eased, unlike in neurotypical depression where it may help sooner. Autistic people are more vulnerable to burnout due to increased sensory sensitivity and nervous system load, and autistic parents may need additional support to prevent overload.
