Looking Beyond the Behaviour

It's easy to focus on a behaviour we find challenging. But what if that behaviour is actually communicating an unmet need, frustration, anxiety, or difficulty expressing emotions?

A key part of a Behaviour Support Plan is understanding what is happening before, during, and after behaviours so effective supports can be put in place. This helps replace stress and confusion with understanding and practical solutions.

Many people experience challenges with communication, emotional regulation, or coping skills. Seeking support is a strength, not a weakness.

Understanding Behaviour Support Plans: Supporting Positive Change

Behaviours that challenge us are often a form of communication rather than a problem to be "fixed". A Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) helps identify the reasons behind behaviours and provides practical, person-centred strategies to improve wellbeing, safety, and quality of life.

Our latest blog explains how BSPs work within the NDIS and how they can help participants, families, carers, and support teams create more positive and supportive environments.

When we understand the "why" behind behaviour, meaningful change becomes possible.

Taking the First Step Matters Most

One of the most important messages from our latest blog is that there is no wrong place to start when seeking mental health support.

In Australia, your GP is often the best first step. They can discuss your concerns, assess your mental health, provide referrals, and help determine whether seeing a psychologist, psychiatrist, or both may be helpful. They may also assist with a Mental Health Treatment Plan if you're eligible.

Everyone's journey is different. Some people benefit from counselling and therapy, others from medical treatment, and many find that a combination of supports works best.

🌱 If you've been thinking about reaching out for help, let this be your reminder that you don't need to have everything figured out before taking that first step.

Understanding When Medical Mental Health Support May Be Needed

Mental health challenges can vary in severity, and sometimes additional medical support may be beneficial.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can assess mental health conditions, provide diagnoses, prescribe medications when appropriate, and monitor treatment over time. People may consider psychiatric support when symptoms are severe, complex, long-term, or significantly impacting daily life.

It's important to remember that seeking specialised support is not a sign that you've failed—it simply means you're exploring the care that best matches your needs.

Breaking Barriers to Mental Health Support

One of the biggest benefits of telehealth psychology is accessibility. 🌱
Online therapy can be especially helpful for people who:

âś… Live in rural or remote areas
âś… Have mobility or transportation challenges
âś… Need greater flexibility around work, study, or family commitments

Mental health challenges are common, and support shouldn't be difficult to access. Telehealth helps bring care closer to people who may otherwise face barriers to receiving help.

🌼Let’s Rethink Anxiety—Together

There are many misconceptions about anxiety:
❌ “It looks the same for everyone”
❌ “It’s just in your head”
❌ “You can always see”

âś… The truth: Anxiety is both physical and emotional, and often invisible.
If you’re struggling, you’re not alone—and support is available in ways that suit your needs.

✨ Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.

💬 Reflection: What’s something you wish more people understood about anxiety?

🌸 Why Your Experience of Anxiety Is Unique

Have you ever wondered why anxiety feels so different from person to person?

That’s because it’s shaped by many factors, including:
🌿 Biology and genetics
🌿 Life experiences and stress
🌿 Physical health and sleep
🌿 Neurodivergence and environment

Your experience is valid, even if it doesn’t match someone else’s.

✨ There is no “right” way to experience anxiety.
