"When I speak to veterans about what they miss about serving in Defence, I often hear a similar answer. Mateship. Camaraderie. In jokes. Ribbing. Terrible nicknames. A shared purpose. A community. A family. Despite their injuries, or how they left Defence, something that was a significant component of their life is now missing.

Sport provides a practical and accessible way to rebuild those connections, creating communities where veterans and their families feel seen, valued and supported."

CEO Miriam Kent shares why Friends of Gallipoli Medical Research initiative exists, and where to from here.

Has sport supported you in your transition to civilian life? Tell us your story.

This Men's Health Week, we recognise the importance of supporting the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of men and boys.

At GMR, we pay particular tribute to the men in our veteran community. Research shows male veterans face a 27% higher risk of su***de than the non-serving population, highlighting the importance of connection and support when men need it most.

A third of men find it difficult to talk to someone about their mental health. A simple conversation can make a real difference.

This week, let's check in, reach out and keep the conversation about men's health going.

Sometimes the best moments are the ones you don't plan.

Yesterday, an incredible group of individuals gathered in the hallways of GMR HQโ€”all people who make a difference to the lives of current and ex-serving Defence members, and their families.

CMDR Sally O'Connor, FCPHR, ADF veteran and three-time Invictus Games competitor Pete Rudland and GMRโ€™s Miriam Kent and Veena Herron, all joined Buddy and Dougal from PAWS Puppies Assisting Wounded Soldiers, alongside Tony and Stephanie Wilson.

Weโ€™re privileged to have so many passionate people walking through our doors on a weekly basis who care as much as we do about the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families.

PTSD and Moral Injury are often spoken about together, but they are not the same thing.

While PTSD is associated with fear-based responses to traumatic events, Moral Injury arises when a person experiences a profound violation of their deeply held beliefs, values or sense of right and wrong.

In a new essay from Dr Bernadette Boss CSC, a respected leader whose distinguished career spans military service, law, public policy and veteran advocacy, Dr Boss explores the importance of understanding the differences between PTSD and Moral Injury, and why this distinction matters for the safety and wellbeing of current and ex-serving ADF members.

Drawing on decades of experience working at the intersection of defence, justice and wellbeing, Dr Bossโ€™ insights reinforce the importance of continued research, awareness and evidence-based approaches to supporting those who have served our nation.
