Not many people expect ‘veterans’ and ‘ballet’ to be in the same program, but the Dance for Veterans program has shown such tremendous results that Gallipoli Medical Research (GMR) has received a grant to help expand the program across the country.

Thanks for funding from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Veteran Wellbeing Grants Program, GMR will work with classically trained dancer and researcher Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) Maher to pilot a new dance program for veterans’ families, loved ones and carers.

The project will also involve digitising the program’s facilitator syllabus, to increase accessibility and support wider implementation of the program.

Last night, sport, science and service united for Beyond the Boundary, a Friends of Gallipoli Medical Research Dinner.

Guests gathered to celebrate the transformational role that sport can play in delivering purpose, identity and connection in the lives of veterans and their families.

A standout moment was the Forged Under Pressure panel, featuring:
• two-time Olympic gold medallist Shayna Jack OAM OLY
• ADF veteran and Invictus Games competitor Pete Rudland
• former Queensland Rugby League CEO and Maroon Ben Ikin and
• renowned psychiatrist Dr Andrew Khoo.

The panel shared a candid conversation about courage in the face of adversity, exploring the similarities between elite sport and the military, and the importance of finding purpose and connection even during the toughest moments.

Our sincere thanks to our sponsors for making this event possible: platinum partner Bupa Australia; gold sponsor Aspen Medical Australia; silver sponsor Ord Minnett and bronze sponsor Novartis; as well as table sponsors The University of Queensland; Paxton-Hall Lawyers; RSL Queensland and MPK.

Thanks also to our generous prize donors: Stadiums Queensland; Suncorp Stadium; Tennis Queensland; QRL - Queensland Rugby League; Brisbane Heat; Queensland Reds; Dolphins NRL; Lexie and Nick Amarandos and Tyson Stelzer.

We're excited to see the Friends of Gallipoli Medical Research initiative continue its momentum with the national launch at Australian Parliament House on 18 August.

Every day, we are surrounded by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) living in the soil beneath our feet, the dust in our homes, and the water flowing through our taps.

Most people have no effect whatsoever. In others, it can cause life-changing disease.

Gallipoli Medical Research has a long-standing partnership with The University of Queensland NTM Research Group. This group is undertaking research to find out why people develop NTM infection while others exposed to the same environment remain healthy.

This NTM Awareness Day, read respiratory researcher Dr Melinda Ashcroft’s essay on piecing together the puzzle of NTM infections:

Love your liver! Craig Zonca from ABC Brisbane radio suggested a new campaign for our livers to finally get the love and attention they deserve.

GMR Director of Research Professor Darrell Crawford spoke to ABC Brisbane last week, saying that while the state of the Australian liver was "not good", some lifestyle changes would soon turn it all around: reducing alcohol intake, avoiding ultra processed foods and stepping up your exercise each week.

"The future of medical research starts with inspiring the next generation.

It was a pleasure to welcome residents from The Women's College within the University of Queensland to GMR for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at our research laboratories.

Led by GMR Liver Research Officer and Lab Supervisor, Dr Kim Bridle, the group explored how our researchers are advancing discoveries that improve the health of veterans, their families and the wider community.

Thank you for your thoughtful questions and enthusiasm. We hope your visit sparked new ideas as you continue your STEM journey.

🔬 Interested in seeing our labs in action? GMR offers private tours for schools, colleges and community groups. Email [email protected] to learn more. Tours are limited to 12 participants.
