🌟 CONGRATULATIONS DR KATRINA DE MARCO! 🌟👏

We are incredibly proud to congratulate our very own Dr Katrina De Marco on being named one of four finalists at the 2026 Primary Healthcare Awards held in Wagga Wagga on Friday night! 🏆

Dr De Marco was nominated in recognition of her outstanding contribution to leadership in Primary Healthcare.

Her dedication to improving healthcare access in rural communities has been instrumental in establishing a sustainable model of regular GP services for residential aged care residents in Hillston, ensuring some of our most vulnerable patients receive the continuity, quality and compassion of care they deserve.

Alongside her busy clinical practice, Dr De Marco also serves as Regional Academic Lead for the University of Wollongong where she plays an important role in educating, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of doctors.

Her commitment to her patients, her profession and the wider rural community is truly commendable.

Katrina, your leadership, dedication and genuine passion for rural healthcare make an enormous difference. We are so fortunate to have you as part of the Your Health Griffith team.

A wonderful achievement and recognition so richly deserved! 💐👏

Congratulations from all of us at Your Health Griffith! ❤️

It’s Mental Health Month. This year’s theme, ‘A Little Connection Goes a Long Way’, is a reminder that even small, everyday moments of connection can support our mental health and wellbeing.

It's completely normal to not always feel okay, and you don’t have to go through it alone. There are support services available by phone and through other forms of communication.

🫁 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 🫁

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. If you're 50 to 70 and smoke, or quit in the last 10 years, screening may suit you.

Lung cancer is Australia's leading cause of cancer death. Almost 85% of people are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when it is harder to treat.

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program started in July 2025. It uses a quick low-dose CT scan to look for lung cancer early, before there are any symptoms.

You may be eligible if you are aged 50 to 70 with no symptoms. You also need to smoke or have quit in the past 10 years and have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years.
You don't have to quit smoking to take part. Under the program the scan has no out-of-pocket cost.

Screening starts with a GP, who checks whether you are eligible and gives you a request for the scan. If you already have symptoms, don't wait for screening. Talk to your GP.

To make an appointment, call 02 6962 7661 or book online through HotDoc.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗢𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆

Tuesday 20th October is World Osteoporosis Day. This year's theme from the International Osteoporosis Foundation is "Build, Protect, Strengthen Your Bones for Life".

Osteoporosis happens when bone becomes weaker and less dense. Bones then break more easily, often from a minor trip or fall that would not normally cause an injury.

Healthy Bones Australia lists the following as common risk factors:
• being 70 or over
• a broken bone from a minor bump or fall
• a parent or sibling with osteoporosis
• losing 3cm or more in height
• early menopause or low testosterone
• smoking or drinking too much alcohol
• not enough calcium, vitamin D or exercise
• some medical conditions, such as coeliac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, an overactive thyroid or chronic kidney disease
• some medicines, such as long-term steroids or certain treatments for breast cancer, prostate cancer or epilepsy

For people aged 70 and over, Medicare provides a rebate for a bone density scan, sometimes called a DXA scan.

Local challenges need local solutions 💙 For older people living in residential aged care homes across rural communities, accessing primary healthcare isn't always easy.

That's why MPHN has worked alongside local general practices and aged care homes to develop the Murrumbidgee Aged Care Access Network, a flexible, nurse-led model tailored to the needs of each community.

From Moulamein to Hillston, the initiative is helping improve access to care, supporting practice nurses to work at the top of their scope and making better use of limited local healthcare resources.

Our innovative approach has been featured in the latest edition of Partyline, the National Rural Health Alliance's magazine, highlighting the value of collaboration and locally designed solutions.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱.

The clocks go forward on Sunday 4 October, so everybody loses an hours sleep. Most people shake that off within a week or so.

If you do not or if you were already waking up tired most mornings well before daylight saving had anything to do with it, that is worth raising with a GP. Persistent tiredness is easy to put down to a busy life. Sometimes that is all it is. It can also be a sign of something treatable: obstructive sleep apnoea, low iron, an underactive thyroid or depression.

Sleep apnoea in particular gets missed for years. The person who notices the snoring and the pauses in breathing is not usually the one who is asleep. The Sleep Health Foundation's national survey of Australian adults found frequent loud snoring reported by 24% of men and 17% of women. Around 70% of those people also reported daytime impairment or other sleep symptoms.

So if that sounds familiar, bring whoever sleeps next to you along to the appointment. They can describe the parts of the night that you cannot.

💛 𝗥 𝗨 𝗢𝗞? 𝗗𝗮𝘆 💛

Sometimes a simple question can make a big difference.

Today is a reminder to check in with the people around us — friends, family, colleagues and loved ones and ask “R U OK?”

You don’t need to have all the answers. Taking the time to listen without judgement can help someone feel supported and less alone.
💬 Ask R U OK?
👂 Listen
🤝 Encourage action
💛 Check in again

And remember — it’s okay to ask for help when you need it too.

A conversation could change a life. 💛
