Psychosocial Recovery Coaching (PRC) is one of the most misunderstood supports under the NDIS.

A Recovery Coach is not simply a support worker with a different job title or a higher hourly rate. It’s also not counselling/psychotherapy, mentoring or life coaching.

Recovery Coaching was designed specifically for people with psychosocial disability to work within a recovery-oriented framework. Recovery is about building hope, independence, choice, resilience and self-determination.

A genuine Psychosocial Recovery Coach should be helping a participant to:

• Understand their mental health and how it affects daily life.
• Identify strengths, goals and personal recovery priorities.
• Develop practical strategies to manage challenges and prevent crises.
• Build natural supports with family, friends and the community.
• Strengthen decision-making, confidence and self-advocacy.
• Coordinate services and work collaboratively with clinicians, families and providers.
• Help participants build the capacity to manage their own supports over time.
• Support participants through periods of change, including plan reviews and transitions.

Recovery Coaching often overlaps with aspects of Support Coordination because both roles involve connecting services, building capacity and coordinating supports. However, PRC always approaches this through a recovery lens, recognising that recovery is personal and that people may experience periods of wellness and periods where they need more support.

Support work certainly has an important place in the NDIS, but it is funded under different support categories for a reason. Recovery Coaching funding exists to build a person’s capacity, reduce reliance on paid supports where possible and support participants to live the life they choose.

Recovery Coaching is a specialist capacity-building support. If your sessions look the same as support work every week, it’s worth asking whether you’re receiving the full Recovery Coaching service your NDIS funding was intended to provide.

Every participant deserves to understand what they’re funded for and to receive supports that genuinely reflect the purpose of that funding.

Hello everyone,

It has been a while since I’ve posted, but I wanted to let everyone know that Gympie Recovery Coaching is still here, still active and still supporting participants, families and the wider community.

Like many of you, I am watching the ongoing discussions around the NDIS and the proposed changes expected throughout 2026. I know that uncertainty can be stressful. Many people are feeling worried, overwhelmed, frustrated or unsure about what the future may hold. Those feelings are completely understandable and valid.

While we may not have all the answers right now, please know that you are not alone. We are navigating these changes together and I remain committed to supporting participants now and into the future.

The NDIS landscape may continue to evolve, but the importance of dignity, choice, inclusion and quality support does not change.

Thank you to everyone who continues to place their trust in me. I appreciate the opportunity to walk alongside you on your journey.

Take care of yourselves and each other. 💖

There’s been a lot of changes with the NDIS of late and a lot of participants are feeling understandably concerned and worried about future plans.

Some are even scared to use their current plans and others aren’t sure how they can use their plan.

Trust me, I hear you and I see you. I have spent so much time since October gathering information, discussing changes, getting clear answers and understanding with peak bodies, NDIA, providers and participants.

If you are feeling confused, stressed and worried about any of the changes, please feel free to reach out.
I’m happy to answer any questions and try to ease your concerns.

We can get through this together!

Sharing a beautiful comic series about Eeyore and his friends that touched my heart. It reminds us that true friendship embraces us for who we are, even in our toughest times. Let’s be the friends who stick around, understanding that those with depression still yearn for connection. In reality, friendships can be challenged, but let’s strive to be like Eeyore’s pals - unwavering, supportive, and loving. 💙
