As I watched this tiny bird standing its ground against an eagle today, I couldn’t help but think about the mothers I support.
What struck me wasn’t that the bird was bigger or stronger than the eagle.
It wasn’t.
It simply wasn’t comfortable with the eagle being in its space.
And it wasn’t afraid to let the eagle know.
As I stood there watching, I found myself thinking about how many mothers feel like that little bird during pregnancy and birth.
Sitting across from doctors, midwives, specialists, policies, procedures, and recommendations that can sometimes feel much bigger than they are.
Not because those people are wrong.
Not because they don’t care.
But because sometimes a mother needs something different.
She needs more information.
She needs more time.
She needs more privacy.
She needs the opportunity to stop, reflect, and decide what feels right for her and her baby.
And I think every mother deserves to know that she can ask questions.
She can ask for more information.
She can ask for more time.
She can ask for privacy.
And she can say, kindly and respectfully,
“Thank you, I’d like some time to think about that.”
Or,
“Thank you, but I’ll be declining that recommendation for now.”
Because confidence isn’t about fighting.
It’s not about proving anyone wrong.
It’s about feeling informed, supported, and connected enough to yourself that you can stand firmly in your own choices.
And when a mother feels that confidence…
she often moves through pregnancy and birth feeling more empowered, more respected, and more at peace with the journey she has taken.
Just like that little bird, sometimes the greatest strength isn’t being the biggest voice.
It’s simply knowing that your voice matters 💛
